  • Being embarrassed in front of family

    *This is a vent*

This was a hard Christmas for several reasons, mostly due to the death of my grandma in October. One of the hardest parts was Xmas dinner...my aunt asked how a good friend of mine is doing, and I say "he got engaged!" Then my darling guy raises both my hands and says "Guess who's NOT??!!," which was met with raucous laughter from my family. I've been with him over 3 years. I told him later that I felt small when he did that and he apologized, but it still smarted a lot. We have our reasons for not wanting to be engaged, numero uno being he's never met my father (he lives in CA) and we haven't had the time/money to get out there to see him. The fact that I want to finish grad school first is another obstacle.

But I just don't like attention being called to it.

    That was mean of him

Sometimes people think they are being so clever or charming with that backwards humiliating humor.

I would have raised his hands and said, "Guess who's SINGLE!?"

Okay, that was a seriously asshole thing to do... how on Earth was that funny?

Not knowing Giggle's family and if they really expect her to be married or not or whether they are okay with the reasons or not, I thought it was pretty clever to come up with on the spot. Problem was, not the right setting for that one.

Bit of a thoughtless thing to do, but it would have been a good intro to a proposal.

I have family who used to make it a damn point whenever they could that my brother was in college (this was a while back) and I still haven't been yet.

I can't wait for someone to bring up how I'm not married and have no kids. Cue HUGE smile and a "DAMN RIGHT and if I have it my way, it ain't changing! Next thing you know, I may just start wearing a bra and get a job!"

He's pretty tight with my fam, and we all give each other pretty good "roasts." But that one crossed the line and he knew it. I'm thinking maybe HE was embarrassed and he just blurted out the first thing that came to his mind. He's been extra nice to me lately, though!

My family is just happy I'm with a great guy that treats me well, even if he has "open mouth, insert foot" moments.

I'd be super pissed if somebody did that to me. Forget inserting foot into mouth, it would be more like insert my foot in that person's ass!

I'm going to take a different tack and stick up for him. Since he's tight with your fam, he was likely just caught up in the moment and blurted out something that seemed clever at the time.

We've all done it...foot-in-mouth time, baby.

I do, however, understand why you were annoyed. I would have been too. Important part is that he apologized and felt badly. If he hadn't, then I'd think you'd have a total tool on your hands.
