  • Sports Team Hatred

See, the Yankees were mentioned in the America's Team thread. I live in Boston, so really, around here we hate the Yankees. And from what I get, people in New York hate the Sox.

I guess I can see not liking another team. Especially if you're in the same division, you have a history together. But I really don't get all the hatred. Like, I like the Red Sox. But I'd never think any less of someone for liking the Yankees. I just don't get it.

And this is why I don't care. It's all regionalism at its...finest? Worse? Bah.

I started high school in VA...where VT and UVA are the be all and end all and Lord forbid they play against each other because everybody will be arguing over who's better than the other.

Come to WV...and we have Marshall and WVU. And the same discussions.

I like my sports (don't particularly care for football, but whatever), but the fan-driven madness eludes me.

Course, I get looks of bewilderment when I say I don't care or hate football. ^__^ That makes it worth it.

It's funny...one of my students last semester said she was a Chicago Bears fan, so we would spend the time before class started exchanging some good nature jabs. "Did you see that interception Rodgers threw?" "Did you see Cutler? Oh, no, he hurt his widdle thumb!" That kind of thing. All in good fun.

My university has several long-time rivalries, K-State and Mizzou in particular. When Mizzou announced they were jumping ship to the SEC, they also said they wanted to continue the annual KU/Mizzou game at Arrowhead Stadium. KU told them which orifice they could stick that deal in. This unleashed a veritable shitstorm of nasty comments from both sides. Mizzou fans said KU didn't want any more losses. KU said that Mizzou were deserters and, as usually happens, Ye Olde Civil War entered the conversation. The insults being slung, even from the athletics staff, were pretty vile and completely uncalled for..I mean, it's a non-issue. KU still has the K-State rivalry, and will also get to enjoy Mizzou sitting at the bottom of the SEC rankings. (Seriously, the first Mizzou/LSU game is going to be some funny shit.)

Another example from college ball. KState is playing U of Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. Someone on my Facebook posted a link to a KState fan forum, where they were blasting the whole damn state of Arkansas. Seriously, I've never read the phrase 'pig fuckers' so many times in my life. I mean, really KState? Oooh, yeah, you're so much more cultured and civilized in Kansas.

I enjoy watching the Packers. Fiance and I definitely get excited, cheer, hiss, all that. But at the end of the day? It's not worth getting grumpy or upset. A loss won't ruin my day.

I never cared for the Bears.

I will say, though, that I've chosen to hate certain teams because of bad players on them, like Vick with the dogfighting and Rapistburger because of his little sex scandal.

Even as a Packers fan, I've hated Favre ever since he decided to be a diva and act like a 16 year old girl that didn't get her way and wouldn't make up her mind. That and when he went all Judas and said "I want to take the Vikings to the Super Bowl before I retire"....muahahahaha, you'll be playing with them until you die then.

See, I have no problem with that. I like Tim Tebow, so I cheer for the Broncos. I don't like Peyton Manning, so I boo the Colts. But if someone loves the colts, or doesn't like the Broncos, I'm not gonna fight them.

I don't care for the Manning brats. They wouldn't be anything without their father.

People can argue and say Clay Matthews comes from a football family, but he didn't have a gravy train high school or college football experience. He was actually quite the underdog when he started out.

I don't mind Eli Manning that much. I feel kinda sorry for him.

I honestly think Peyton does have a lot of natural talent, and I respect him for that. I'm just SO TIRED of hearing about him. He's been the topic of conversation after every Colts game this year and HE HASN'T PLAYED

Eli looks like a sick goat.

But then again, I'm biased as usual. Good God is Aaron Rodgers one hunky man.

I think he's got a weird chin. Eli's a little better, but his eyes are off

                    Amen.

The Manning brothers aren't bad. Tebow has a super weird nose.

The Manning bros are not good looking dudes in my opinion. And that's all I'm going with that.

See, I do hate the Patriots and I do hate the Red Sox. I don't instantly hate fans of those teams but it definitely changes the way I look at them. I'll definitely start out skeptical and unfavorable.

It's the Philadelphia Phillies fans that I can't stand though and I freely admit that when someone admits they are a fan of the Phillies, I start to feel...I don't want to say dislike but there's not much else to say. Of any sport and any team, Phillies fans are the worst. They are, in general, the biggest scum there is. They are some of the most rude, violent people I meet. I have plenty of friends from school who are Phillies fans and when we interact, all is good. But when it comes to baseball and/or watching the Phillies, I don't even want to be around them.

I hate the Patriots simply because of the cheating scandal. After that, their "winning" status and "champion" status meant nothing to me anymore, as cheaters never truly win.

I can't speak for baseball. Hockey, however:

Look at the Boston media hit that was done on the Vancouver Canucks in Boston during the last play offs. From the way they ( and the fans ) were treated you'd swear the team had come out on Game 1 and strangled a puppy to death live on network TV. Wearing a Canucks jersey on the street was quite literally getting people spat on, threatened, assaulted, etc.

There are a couple of cities with sports fans that seem to be just total miserable assholes I've noticed. The two that really leap to mind though are:

Boston. Who will actually mock and cheer horrible season ending injuries to the other team. For reference, the guy that went down just broke vertabrae. But the Bruins as a team are....yeaah. I'm not sure if the fans reflect the team or if the team reflects the fans, but that's the reputation they have and they live up too it. >.>

Philly. Whose fans seem to be just generally all around rather unpleasent from throwing beer at cops to puking on little girls to actually jumping into the penalty box to pick a fight with players from the other team. But the Flyers are a pretty miserable team too ( You don't get "Broad Street Bullies" with upstanding sportsmenship ).

Granted, nothing really tops soccer fans, does it? ( How the hell did that happen not once but twice? -.- )
