I will preface this by saying I'm a pretty picky eater. I've been razzed before because my subs I get from Subway are super bland and "safe", and I mostly only cook spaghetti, mac and cheese, and make turkey/ham wraps, and basic hotdishes that are hamburger, noodles and cheese.
Being as in the past couple of years I've been struggling financially, I've realized how much I used to waste food (I didn't start cooking in bulk and living off leftovers until I realized how poor I am). Granted, I don't buy into the whole "starving children in Africa would LOVE your peas!" spiel that parents use to guilt trip their kids and hippies use to discourage people from wasting, but damn, some of the people I know are just damn overly picky and wasteful!
Like I said before, I play things pretty "safe" with foods, and don't often go out of the box a lot because especially now, I don't want to waste food.....if there's something I don't like, I'll box it and give it to someone at work later or I'll let people I'm dining with share it. But unless the food in front of me is undercooked or flat out disgusting, I'm not going to toss half a burger and half an order of fries because they aren't "perfect". Not that I rampantly bitch at people or anything or make a scene, but I tend to save everything I don't eat for later if I liked it, or give it away if I don't.
I invited a friend last summer to go to Olive Garden with me, whom had never been there, and I advised if they wanted to play it safe, just order stuff that everyone eats normally at home, like spaghetti, fettuccini alfredo, ravioli. They picked the angel hair virgin olive oil pasta with some kind of fish (can't remember what the whole meal entails) and they poked and hemmed and hawed at it, and didn't say anything but "It's gross" and didn't even want me to have it boxed so I could take it home and give to my brother or someone at work who is actually more poor than I am and who sometimes we give food we don't want to.
As of last Sunday, I decided I no longer want to even go out to eat with this person anymore, because I finally realized not too long ago that ANYWHERE we go (mostly fast food places), they find some kind of problem with any food that they order (fries are soggy, fries are too salty, fries are "weird looking", burger is too done, the sauce on the burger is gross) and without fail, they'll want to toss half or more of their food away. Take a few bites, cop an attitude or whine "It's gross". For a few times, I advised they pick where to eat.....but that doesn't even help. They still don't like their food.
Even when we go to regular sit-down restaurants, they find something wrong with the cheese curds or whatever food it is.
At least my other picky friend....she's just a food snob in general, and I don't go out to eat with her much because her taste is so expensive and so fancy that fast food treats or Olive Garden or Red Lobster isn't good enough, we have to go downtown to where there's organic and "locally made" sandwiches and soups and whatnot.
And I also don't believe I should "suffer" and eat gross or undercooked food just to get my money's worth, but at the same time, I don't pitch a fit or throw my food all away because I happened to go to McDonalds at a time where they didn't have the freshest of fries, or if I go to Arby's and they accidentally had a cold fry in with my hot ones. That's just wasteful.
There are only a few things I can still afford nowadays that I can enjoy, and fast food treats once or twice a week are one of them. That, and being able to have bulk pastas and whatnot to cook at home and keep for several days to live off of.
