  • Overly Picky Wasteful Eaters

I will preface this by saying I'm a pretty picky eater. I've been razzed before because my subs I get from Subway are super bland and "safe", and I mostly only cook spaghetti, mac and cheese, and make turkey/ham wraps, and basic hotdishes that are hamburger, noodles and cheese.

Being as in the past couple of years I've been struggling financially, I've realized how much I used to waste food (I didn't start cooking in bulk and living off leftovers until I realized how poor I am). Granted, I don't buy into the whole "starving children in Africa would LOVE your peas!" spiel that parents use to guilt trip their kids and hippies use to discourage people from wasting, but damn, some of the people I know are just damn overly picky and wasteful!

Like I said before, I play things pretty "safe" with foods, and don't often go out of the box a lot because especially now, I don't want to waste food.....if there's something I don't like, I'll box it and give it to someone at work later or I'll let people I'm dining with share it. But unless the food in front of me is undercooked or flat out disgusting, I'm not going to toss half a burger and half an order of fries because they aren't "perfect". Not that I rampantly bitch at people or anything or make a scene, but I tend to save everything I don't eat for later if I liked it, or give it away if I don't.

I invited a friend last summer to go to Olive Garden with me, whom had never been there, and I advised if they wanted to play it safe, just order stuff that everyone eats normally at home, like spaghetti, fettuccini alfredo, ravioli. They picked the angel hair virgin olive oil pasta with some kind of fish (can't remember what the whole meal entails) and they poked and hemmed and hawed at it, and didn't say anything but "It's gross" and didn't even want me to have it boxed so I could take it home and give to my brother or someone at work who is actually more poor than I am and who sometimes we give food we don't want to.

As of last Sunday, I decided I no longer want to even go out to eat with this person anymore, because I finally realized not too long ago that ANYWHERE we go (mostly fast food places), they find some kind of problem with any food that they order (fries are soggy, fries are too salty, fries are "weird looking", burger is too done, the sauce on the burger is gross) and without fail, they'll want to toss half or more of their food away. Take a few bites, cop an attitude or whine "It's gross". For a few times, I advised they pick where to eat.....but that doesn't even help. They still don't like their food.

Even when we go to regular sit-down restaurants, they find something wrong with the cheese curds or whatever food it is.

At least my other picky friend....she's just a food snob in general, and I don't go out to eat with her much because her taste is so expensive and so fancy that fast food treats or Olive Garden or Red Lobster isn't good enough, we have to go downtown to where there's organic and "locally made" sandwiches and soups and whatnot.

And I also don't believe I should "suffer" and eat gross or undercooked food just to get my money's worth, but at the same time, I don't pitch a fit or throw my food all away because I happened to go to McDonalds at a time where they didn't have the freshest of fries, or if I go to Arby's and they accidentally had a cold fry in with my hot ones. That's just wasteful.

There are only a few things I can still afford nowadays that I can enjoy, and fast food treats once or twice a week are one of them. That, and being able to have bulk pastas and whatnot to cook at home and keep for several days to live off of.

I'm picky about certain things too... so I only rarely go "exploring" on a menu, I ask for things I don't like to be left off, etc. And if I do order something I haven't tried before and just absolutely can't stand it, I won't eat it... but yeah, offer it to someone else if you know someone who would take it (it's a bit weird offering your leftovers to strangers, especially when you've been eating off it). Worst comes to worst, Dad's dog gets a treat. He'll eat about anything except eggs. He even chews gum.

(And now something about this thread has got me desperately wanting lasagna. It's 2 AM, meaning the fastest way to get lasagna would be to go buy a frozen one, throw it in the oven, and have it ready around 6 AM when I'm sound asleep.)

I see a lot of that at work, people who order twice as much as they'll eat and then throw away servings untouched. Like it is so hard to come and order more and wait two minutes if they don't want to take a to go box.

I think what I hate most about it is they usually come back complaining it's not fresh enough, when they ordered too much and have been eating for 30+ minutes, or were waiting on someone else and waited to eat but didn't wait to order. We make everything except salad dressing to order, and we don't have anything meant to be served cold. ;(

If it is something iffy, like our fried jalapenos, I'll even offer a sample, but noooo.

I USED to have an issue with my niece. She would get more food on her plate than her little stomach is capable of holding. She wont do this at my house or when her dad is home at hers.

heck in my leaner days (married, not making a whole lot of money, with one kid) my lunch (for at least one or two days) used to be leftovers from last nights dinner.

heck even now say a double box of Hamburger Helper lasts 2 or 3 days for GF and me.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

People at buffets piss me off the most, when they pile on the food and don't even eat hardly any of it.

Like I said, I'm really not a raging hippie about giving food to strangers or saving world hunger....but for the love of gord.....I don't get how some people can always have a problem with everything they order and seemingly throw away all this decent food.

I'm very picky when it comes to food as well. I don't like trying new things simply for the feeling that if I don't like it, I feel like it is wasted.

Thats why I always try and get a small bite-size sample. Like at buffets, I do pile up on foods, but 2 or two items each... so the pile is made up of 15 different foods.

I'm a big fusspot, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing I would eat when we eat out (MUM!!). Generally I like steak, and I always order it with just the meat and the chips, none of the usual peripherals. They won't get eaten, so it's a waste for the kitchen to cook them.

Is it possible that this friend just doesn't like to eat at the places you go? Which one of you is choosing the restaurants?

I don't like the food at the Olive Garden and most fast food places either.

Of course, if that's the problem, the onus is on your friend to speak up so you can both choose a different place to eat.

Bollocks. Everyone likes Italian food. And The Olive Garden's breadsticks are so damn good!

I'm a very picky eater. As a result, when I go out, I order what I know I'll like. I don't see the point of ordering food I won't eat.

As far as buffets go, I don't see the point in getting a crapload of food. You can keep going back and back. No point in overloading.

My daughter and I have started a tradition that I hope will go for a while. Last weekend we went to Costco and bought stuff that we knew we would split and eat. big bag of potatoes-- split it up. bag of onions -- split it up. etc. And each pay about half. It turned out really well.

As for leftovers I made about 6 burgers (from the costco run , had 2 last night, left 2 for my bf and took 2 for lunch today

I also try to make bread as often as possible, with flour and yeast and what not purchased from the bulk section. And a bread machine. Easy

Hell, just take some of those potatoes, mash them up, and make some pierogies!

You missed the end of the paragraph you quoted from; she has let them choose, and it didn't help.

But preferably save them for when I come back. I'll supply the case of beer necessary for pierogi making.
