In my experience $100 bills are great for when you're making purchases of $100 or more. Say if I'm buying a money order for $600 then it's easier for me to pay with 6 bills vs 30 bills. Of course assuming all my $100-bills check out properly.
The thing is though... Banks issue you money in the form you ASK for, but the default is usually $20 bills, unless you're withdrawing a very large amount. Or unless you ask for a different denomination.
As for ATMs they give out $20 because not everyone can afford to just pull out $100, and most of them have daily limits anyway.
So really there isn't an excuse to try purchasing a $.05 item with $100.
