  • Overzealous apple users.

What the fuck is wrong with people? Specifically the Apple users out there.

The iPad 2 and the new iPhone 4s are recently released and people are asking and begging on Yahoo Answers and on the social media sites for information as to when the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are coming out.

It's either a case of people who are not willing to buy anything for fear that as soon as they finally get up the stones to buy one it will be replaced with next year's model with the all new "go faster stripes".

    -or-

It's people who want the latest and greatest thing so badly that they are flat out unable to enjoy the gizmo they just bought.

One guy I've run across was giving us all the "I haz a sad" because he heard a rumor from a friend who heard it from a friend that read it on a banner ad on a porn site that the iPhone 5 was going to have a "turnip twaddler" (Bloom County reference...sorry, showing my age) and his less than 24 hours old iPhone 4s didn't have one and so his shiny new phone just was not worth having anymore.

For fuck's sake my Angel Fish has a longer attention span than this guy has. At least my fish will stare at me for hours on end until I'll finally get off my ass and feed him.

Plus, the fish is unlikely to complain about the food, eh?

Fanbois are fanbois. Every shiny tech object has them, and they're all blooming idjits.

I quit talking to an internet friend because he was becoming a rabid Apple fanboy. What's worse, he started working in an Apple store, so he gained even more unwarranted brand loyalty. Drove me crazy, especially when he wouldn't STFU about me buying a Mac instead of a PC.

If I tell you I don't want a Mac then just accept it, jackhole. Don't start talking down to me like I'm suddenly too stupid to make my own decisions about electronics.

Rabid fanboys come with rabid haters...I've been lamblasted in the past for owning an iPod. FFS, it's the only Apple thing I have, I've had it for three years...and it was a gift!! At least the most rabid Apple hater I know is actually quite intelligent and is able to accept that. (he's a uni mate of mine)

Brand loyalty, feh. Phone is a Nokia, laptop is a Toshiba, TV is some cheap Sainsbury's own brand... if it kinda works and is cheap, it'll do...

Some of it could be that they *were* looking for a specific feature and it didn't make the current model... of course, to me that would be a reason to stick with my old one unless it quit working or I didn't have an old one to keep.

For example, so far as I know, Apple does not put blueray drives in any of its products. If I were looking to replace mine (which I would be, had I the money) and if it were almost time for a revision to come out, I might well wait on it hoping that that particular upgrade would be included. (Not that that's likely; they're moving more towards not including optical drives at all and making you download everything. But it's the best example I could come up with quickly.)

Meanwhile, it's not just Apple. I remember seeing a lot of this when Vista (I think it was Vista) came out with all sorts of things most people wouldn't even notice, like new file systems, dropped because they were taking too long.

(Bloom County reference...sorry, showing my age)
I don't remember the turnip thing but it sounds like something BB would create.

As for the crazies... eh, i consider myself a serious apple fan. but not that psychotic.

actually i feel somewhat like the apple fans have been infiltrated by crazy fanbois. kinda like how... say an AD&D 2.0 gamer would feel if suddenly having the ranks infiltrated by newbs who think they're the top gamers, even though they just started a week ago. etc.

although part of me also feels slightly like a hypocrite cos i think my bf might get me a new ipod since he never did find the bday gift i wanted (and it's almost 2 months past, lol). but even then... i'm not getting rid of my *old* ipod. it still functions. kinda. but it holds all of the music so it's good for long trips at least

Kind of reminds me of a former coworker of mine who smirks at people who "still have flipper phones" because apparently everyone should now have a smart phone that can browse the Internet, stream videos, and all other various things that no one 20 years ago would have ever dreamed a phone could do.

The other day at work, a guy was in the library trying to print something out, and he couldn't get it to print the way he wanted it to. Apparently, the font was too small for him (it was because of the web site). But he insisted that it was because the computers in the library were PCs and not MACs.

I actually get a kick out of people who have Macs and then have an Android based phone. Quite a few of them (most "older" Samsung Android based phones) aren't compatible with Macs and you have to hook them up to a computer in order to get the software update. The shit I have to hear at the call centre when I get one of those people. Then they bitch about how they should have stayed with the iPhone.

You know, I get brand loyalty, I really do, but iPhone (and Mac users in general) tend to take it to new levels of insanity.
I have brand loyalty, I've had good experiences with Insignia and Sony, so when I buy home entertainment products I look at Insignia and Sony first. I've had good luck with Compaq, Asus, and Toshiba for computers, so those are the computers I look at first. When I travel, I have had the best experiences at Holiday Inn Express, so I look for rooms their first.
The key word in all those sentences was "first". That doesn't mean I just stop and don't consider anything else. I know a lot of Mac users do just that, but I know quite a few people who will scoff at even the idea of looking at anything that isn't an Apple. I know several who look at me like I'm stupid because I not only don't have brand loyalty to Apple, but the brand loyalty I do have isn't absolute. Seriously, it's a free marketplace based on competition... take advantage of it.

If you're talking about "Mac users in general," then it's a bit different. Replacing a Mac with another Mac means staying with the same OS. (Indeed, unless you mess up badly in the move, you almost won't even notice you're on a different computer.) Replacing it with *anything* else means changing operating systems. It's not just a matter of learning, either; your old applications won't work. It's a pain, even aside from which you like better on its own merits. (It matters much less if all you do is web browsing, of course.)

It's a very different proposition than choosing between Compaq and Toshiba.

Actually I should amend my title. It's not just the iPhone users who are like this.

A friend of mine who works in the local Verizon store agreed with me that it is incredibly stupid and mentioned that it is not limited to Apple's product.

He relates that he had one chap who was asking over and over again when the Droid Razr Maxx was coming out. For months this chap was all put camped on his door step waiting with baited breath for this new phone of awesome. He was coming in at least twice to three times per week asking if it was in yet.

Really annoying since my friend told him the exact date it was coming out and all he needed to do was to pre-order it and one would be there waiting for him.

Stupid fucker never did. Just kept coming in and asking "when" as if he had never heard the release date.

Finally the day of the release and the guy upgraded his phone (at full price since he was not eligible for upgrade at that time). My friend thought that at last his ordeal was over with. Not to be the case however as the very next day the guy was complaining that the phone was not as awesome as he had hoped.

When asked the guy admitted that the phone did come with everything that Motorola was promising, that everything worked as it was supposed to. In fact when driven to the point where his back was to the wall, he admitted that there was no problems with the phone in either functionality or with features.

Then he asked the question (and remember kids, this was 24 hours later) "When is the next one coming out?"

Which is why I have to ask. What the hell is it with people chasing the features. Why can they not be happy (as this person was not) with what they lust after and get?

I swear that the next generation phones could promise that it will serve ice cream in all flavors imaginable and the fan-tards will lust after it and cream their jeans with just the promise of that feature alone.

Then when they get their grubby little protuberances on it I swear someone within ear shot of me (or on an online forum) will look at their fresh out of the box, un-sullied by human hands phone and say "But it doesn't make sno-cones."

And that will be the day Mongo tries to shove them up their own ass.

My computer is now about 4 years old. When I got it was pretty close to top of the line. Fortunately, computers haven't been going up at the exponential rates that they' ve been going up in the past so now I'm at the middle of the pack which is just fine with me. I'm thinking of getting the iPhone 4S though but I have a plan where I can upgrade annually. I'm hoping this will be the last phone for a while. For the most part, I try to be sane with electronics because the initial round will have problems.

I wonder if they'll come with sno cone maker attachements?

In the course of my (short) years... I've gone through...
                              2.. maybe 3... phones.
                              2 MP3s.
                              2 computers.
                              1 laptop (still using)

I often think about getting one of the new types... but I stop and think:
"Why the fuck do I want that?"

The most I use a phone for is for calling and texting. Why do I need these features if I got a computer at home and a gameboy?

I maybe a tech head in my family... but there is a fine line between wanting and needing. And I don't need an upgraded version if my current one works fine.
Phone, camera and video recorder all in one? I'll keep that in mind when I need to use that crap CONSTANTLY.
20GB extra space for music? I'll keep that in mind when I fill up my current one with songs... Its not even half full yet.

Also... I save a ton of money by NOT rushing to the store every time they annouce a reskinned phone with an extra 5GB to it's memory.
