  • What irritates me about the internet.

Must... rant... -.- Btw, the "you" in my bullet points is directed to the people who have committed these crimes, not anyone here.

    1. Spammers. Really get on my nerves. If you haven't anything intelligent to say, then don't bother making a post. There is also no point in ressurecting an old thread just to post "I agree" or a smilie.

    2. People who use constant chatspeak and shortened words. The odd one or two here and there isn't a problem; I mean when a person is using only shortened words rendering their posts unreadable. This isn't a chatroom and you are not texting on a mobile phone, so cut it out.

    3. Any kind of stupid speak, like ebonics or KrAzY. Also cutesy spellings of words, especially body parts.

    4. People who give themselves deliberately sexy names. Especially if said people are under 16 years of age. Even adults should think before they call themselves "Sexygirl69"; it's hard to take them seriously when they do.

    5. Poor spelling and grammar. Yes, I know that it's sometimes hard to spell correctly all the time, especially if English is not your first language, but at least try. Also, try to capitalise the first word in a sentence and use full stops and commas when needed. It makes your posts easier to read and stops people from assuming that you're just an idiot.

    6. People who insist that they are right, despite all evidence to the contrary. This also goes for people who refuse to listen to different opinions to theirs, or who make a thread expecting people to agree with them, and then throw a tantrum when the opposite happens.

    7. Pre-teens and teenagers online. Yes, I know that it's virtually impossible to avoid them, and that not all pre-teens and teens are bad, but in my experience a lot of them are guilty of the crimes listed here; and they never listen to mods who try and put them right, or read the rules of a forum. These people, if they don't end up banned from everywhere, will eventually grow up to become those irritating adult noobs that we've all encountered, both on and offline.

    8. Newbies with say, 1 or 2 posts who insist that they should be made mods. Or who start bossing other users around, telling them to abide by the rules or threatening them with banning. Only mods and admins can do this; when an ordinary user starts doing it, it becomes annoying for all concerned.

    9. Abuse of numbers. Like, for example, 1337. Also, smilie abuse. Sometimes if there's a character limit, people fill in the gap with smilies rather than say something worth reading. Also, some people swamp their posts with so many smilies that their post becomes meaningless.

    10. Image theft. Not only is it extremely rude to steal someone's hard work and pass it off as your own, but it's also illegal if they have it copyrighted. Ask permission first and always give credit. Also, if you put your photos on a public site, you need to understand that there's always a risk that some weirdo may take them. Put them in a passworded album, and/or watermark them to keep them safe.

    11. Friending. For example, people who PM you asking you to be their friend (some message boards allow this, also this pertains to Facebook, Myspace and other social networking sites) and then get pissy when you refuse them. I will not take random friend requests ever, not unless I actually know the person. Think about this for a minute. If you were walking down the street and a complete stranger walked up to you and said, "OMG! Wanna be bestest friends forever!" I somehow doubt you'd comply. I'm a cranky, cynical bitch. Unless you actually take the time to get to know me, it's unlikely we'll have anything in common. So don't bother asking.

    12. Imposters. It's actually illegal to impersonate someone, and could get you in a lot of trouble. Parodies, where a person isn't being serious, are fine as long as they are funny and don't actually claim to be the person.

    13. Fanfic atrocities. Just cuz you're writing fiction is no reason to basically crap all over canon. Yes, you can have a non canon pairing, but for the love of cheese, do it properly. That means research, keeping characters as they are in canon, and writing correctly. Not pairing your fave canon with your stupid self insert Mary Sue. Also, if you get criticised, take it to heart and try to do better, don't just throw a tantrum and shriek, "If you don't like it, don't read it!". If you don't like criticism, then don't put your fanfic on a public forum.

    14. People who REFUSE TO READ THE RULES. Most sites have them stuck at the top of the forums. They are not hard to find or obey.

    15. Disrespecting the mods and admins. Contrary to what a lot of people (see 7) think, mods and admins are not required to bend over backwards and be constantly sweetness and light to users, while taking every bit of abuse that said users throw at them. If you are as rude to your bosses or teachers as you are to online mods and admins, then you will not get very far in life and will probably end up either in traction or in a prison cell. Mods and admins have a hard, thankless job in looking after forums and don't need some bratty little creep abusing them for deleting or locking their spam thread. Either suck it up when you're told off, or leave.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

Just a few comments on the above.

English as a second language - my experience is that most foreigners who are in this position are apologetic about their skills, yet some of the most exacting grammarians around on their own posts. I used to edit articles for an online webpage, and it was a standard rule that the best-written articles were either from university students (and we're talking near valedictorian status, if I spelled that correctly), or from ESL submittors.

I once had a submission that had me offering help on the grounds that it was obviously not their first language. My offer of help was genuine, as was their puzzlement - they only spoke English, but you wouldn't know it from their writing.

People wanting to be made mods - I've never had anyone asking for that. We offer it on CS when we need more people in the team, and we understand fully if someone refuses. It's damned hard work for no financial or physical reward. If someone asks for moderator status, it's very likely that they just want the power - it's a major reason to refuse them.

I've also noticed the CS forum has a few people who admit to being admins on other boards (you as well, Lace? I seem to remember that...) I'm guessing that it's a relief to be just another member at some point. It's one of the reasons I sometimes fool about on vBulletin.org's community lounge.

Rules - the CS rules are too long. I keep meaning to trim them down, or rework them to make a main rule/reasons thing. However, the army has a phrase that their rules are written in the blood of people who fouled up. The rules on CS are there because someone offended against common decency and said, "Well, it wasn't in the rules!"

One to add to the list, if I may? I pay an extra licence to keep this separate board running for debate topics, but very often I see people saying things like, "XXX, but that's for Fratching," or similar. Most of them never come over here, but the important thing is that they know it's for over here and still sodding well say it where everyone knows it will explode.

Well said, and I appreciate the last one

Seriously though, when will people get it through their heads that the concept of "freedom of speech" does *not* apply to message boards. I've dealt with plenty of idiots who act like jerks on boards, and then whine they're being "censored," or that we're "fascists" when we tell them to knock it off. Last time I checked, message boards are *privately-run* and the admins can do whatever they want.

Also, insulting mods and/or acting like an asshole doesn't go over very well. Ask anyone who was around on CS when the various attacks of Greg occurred. (For those who don't know...he was a mod who decided to do some damage--locking and destroying threads as he went, as well as threatening some of our female mods then. He got banned, but attempted to return under different names. Couldn't understand why we declared "open season" on his ass. That is, he was exempted from our protection...and people were allowed to openly rip on him )

We have a difficult job, which we take seriously. We want CS and Fratching to be a place free from spam and personal attacks. We try to treat everyone with respect. However, some people don't want to do that, and wonder why we "come after" them. That's not the case at all--we will though, pay closer attention to what you're doing though. Piss us off completely, and we'll deal with you accordingly.

With that out of the way... let me introduce annoying thing #16

      16. Don't flirt with people, and then get upset over the attention. You wanted it, you got it. Don't want the (possibly negative) attention? Then either don't do it, or grow up and deal. Don't come whining to us over it--It's not our problem.

        Raps,

Yeah; I'm an admin on one board, a super mod on another and a regular mod on yet another; I really like to be able to come on here and CS.com and just be a regular member for once. It's tiring, thankless work being a mod or admin so I get how much hard work you and your mods put into the site.

On one board, we have had so many people ask to be mods it's just not funny any more. The ones who ask are usually either newbies with a couple of posts, or up their own butt noobs who have more chance of winning the lottery than being let loose on a forum. O_o

As for rules; the rules I have on the board where I admin are long, but still nowhere near as long as they once were. O.o I mostly want to kick rulebreakers up the arse when they say "Well, it wasn't in the rules!" and shout, "Common sense, ever heard of it?" XD

And yeah; I also see people saying that when it's not really needed or wanted. If a debate is on a minor issue, is it really Fratching material?

          Awww - I love using the "That's for Fratching" line..(wonder if I'm who you're thinking of )

Add another one.. though it's not net specific, nor really much of an issue - just annoying. I'm a mod elsewhere, but it sort of seems that if I don't do stuff on it, nothing will happen. Forums require people to show up and put there stuff on - not a place where a person called a mod tries to tell the world (or those members) what's going on.

Raps - you mean uni students know their grammar these days? I thought they were amongst the worst out there??? And yes, when you learn a foreign language, you are actually taught all the rules for grammar. But when you're brought up with a language, you usually don't know it as well, because for the most part, you're just parroting stuff you already 'know' (or not - as the case often is...).

I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, but there have been a few annoying instances.

For the grammar thing, I'm thinking about the ones who actually do know their stuff. Rare, I know.

Can I add that it also doesn't mean freedom from consequences of said speech?

I try to just lure people over here with the phrase "I'd post here/respond but I think it would go better on fratching-exit stage left"

Sadly not many follow me<cries in the corner>

and for the record Raps and the mod team-you guys rock-I've never been part of a message board that felt "safe" and kept a separate site for the more controversial topics. I also like the new stuff I'm stumbling upon over at CS.

I for one, does know what it is like to be a mod and an admin. It is a thankless job.

I at times, will be an ass. I do not mean to be, but on some things I just want to mention another point of view. Or try to get all the facts.

I do put to many comma's in a sentence, but that is what I was taught.

Argh... that is such a pain. -.- That also ties in with my rule 4; ie, people who deliberately sign up with a sexy username. To my mind, if your username is "Sexybitch" or "Whoregirl", you have no right to whine about people perving over you. If you didn't want that kind of attention, then you should have chosen a less provocative name. Yes, I know that it's the pervs who are at fault; but you shouldn't give them an open invitation to do so, by either flirting or by calling yourself a provocative name.

Blessings of cookies and goodness to the admin and mods of CS. If not for your hard work, I would have exploded at work long ago.

I have more recently started exploring the fratching side and I find it mentally engaging and a wonderful release from my reality.

I have to say this site has some of the best policing I've seen. Other forums I'm on have the regular spammers making fake comments and pushing some crap website. I don't think I've ever seen that here.

My fiance is a forum host/moderator for a commercial site and that is a full time job. So thanks to those who give here.
I feel crazy. Like I'm drunk and trapped in a water globe and someone won't stop shaking it.
