  • Going to the movies!

I used to like going to the movies, but I rarely go anymore at all for a variety of reasons, let me break it down for you:

    - For the love of all things decent, you ARE capable of either silencing your cellphone OR (GASP! Horrors!) turning it OFF for a two hour film. I want to watch a movie, not listen to you quietly giggling about whatever stupid shit your friend just put on Facebook

    - Soooo many ads. I remember the days when there were NO commercials in front of films. That's right, NONE. Now I must endure at LEAST 15 minutes of commercials followed by another 10 minutes of trailers (which I don't mind) before the Feature starts, thus stretching what should be a two hour experience to nearly THREE, if not sometimes longer.

    - ENOUGH WITH THE 3D ALREADY! - Now, I happen to be among a minority of people who CAN'T see 3D. That's right, I have an issue with one of my eyes that causes to me not process visual information correctly, therefore I cannot see any 3D picture or image.

HOWEVER, at the same time I realize that they put so MANY movies out in 3D that really don't benefit much from the technology. I can see a justification for seeing a big action movie in 3D, but when you're putting crap like Justin Bieber: Never say Never or The Smurfs in 3D, there's really no justification.

    - Outrageous concession prices. I realize that's where the theatre makes the bulk of their money, but charging north of $5 for a pack of candy that I can get at a gas station or pharmacy for $1.50 is a little much. I will either smuggle some snacks in myself or go without. Call me an SC if you will, but I refuse to pay that much for some food.

    - Kids. Some kids are well behaved. I appreciate these kids. Some kids are...not so well behaved and, sadly, all it takes is one screaming kid or one kid laughing at inappropriate times to ruin an entire movie for me. Maybe I'm overly sensitive, but any loud obnoxious noise tends to distract from me what's happening on the screen.

    - Quality of films. I'm sorry, I'm at a point now where there are very few movies that I make a point to see at the theatre. A lot of them just don't hold much appeal for me. Typically I'll watch a few of the summer blockbusters and that's about it. Most dramas, comedies and the like, I will wait for on Netflix/DVD/Redbox/etc. Also I really get tired of sequels and reboots. What happened to originality?

    - Ticket prices. The theatre closest to me charges about $9 for a show and offer no discounts for weekday or Matinee shows. So if I go with my wife, that's $18 right there, before any snacks or drinks. For the same price, we can rent THREE DVDs from a Redbox and buy a bunch of snacks to go with them.

I guess now that I have a decent sized HDTV and I'm a little more cash conscious, going the movies just doesn't interest me much anymore.

I went to a matinee showing of Project X yesterday with my stepdad. The price was $9.50 each. Regular prices are $11.50. Wtf kind of deal is that?

thankfully the cinema here(marcus) has a "movie passport" $25/month and you can see as many movies as you want to.

Well, I also learned when I went that if you go early afternoon, there's one person selling tickets, one person doing concessions, and NO ONE checking tickets when you go to the movies. The person selling tickets just rips it. There's also two entrances to the movie theater. One is the front where the tickets are. The other is from the food court of the mall and I'm pretty sure movie hopping would be insanely easy.

I can't deal with 3D either. It gives me an instant tension headache, just like the ones I get at the beginning of the week from switching back to night mode.

You could make an equivalent argument against most movies having multi-channel soundtracks; why not stick with mono? And most stories don't really require the use of *color* film, do they?

I always smuggle food in. They don't check anymore. Yay for deep pockets.

Where I live they are forced by law to allow you to enter with food.

I always bring food and drink in my bag; they're not allowed to search bags. Apparently, according to my brother who used to work for Odeon, the reason why they take drinks off people is to stop people smuggling alcohol in.

Where I live even before prices were nuts they wouldn't allow outside food and drink because when someone got sick in one of their theaters once while eating food that was like what they sold but not actually sold by them they got sued.

I actually like seeing the previews, and some of the ads, but they do go overboard. Eventually my inner Homer kicks in and I want to make a scene "start the movie! start the movie!"

What I really hate is that I can't stop the movie if I have to go to the bathroom. If it's a good movie, I either end up holding it in and being miserable or missing part of the movie.

One of the radio personalities I listen too is also the movie reviewer just cause he likes seeing every movie out there in the theaters. I think him being the evening DJ helps with this since he can go to the mid afternoon showings after the midnight releases.

He got asked how he handles the bathroom deal and he stated, "I go twice. Once when I leave the house and once before I head in. Only during one of the Potter movies did this fail me...because it was long."

I do the same as the reviewer, but my love for the giant sodas and movie popcorn gets me sometimes. (I hardly ever go to the movies, so if I'm going, I'm getting that delicious popcorn.) Memoirs of a Geisha, with all of its rain/water symbolism was near torture.

Same here. The most recent movie I saw in a theater was the recent Muppet one, and the last before that was either the first (modern) Transformers movie, or else there was one (but no more than one) in between that I've forgotten. Divided out over a couple of years, even movie popcorn and soda is cheap

I go to the theater semi-regularly because the local theater does $5 Tuesdays. They finally changed so the 3D shows were an additional $2, unlike the first several months.

And no matter that the stuff on the popcorn isn't even close to butter, I always get a bucket.
