hmm, perhaps instead of a door lock, installing one of those door-closers like they put in office buildings or on screen doors? that way you wont have to deal with the "omg locks!!!" drama, and at the same time won't have to worry about the door being left open since it will swing itself shut. might take some fiddling to get the strength right, but could be worth it.
