1 day boycotts

Let me drop some knowledge. A Boycott is effective because a group of people refuse to patronize a company until the Company does X. This hurts the company and they must comply or continue losing thousands of dollars a day.

Now then boycotting a company for a day has 0 effect at all on the company. For that day you don't patronize the company and yet are shocked when the next day they still haven't changed their "evil" ways.

Here is the thing if your boycotting for one day it means that you and all of the people that would have ordinarily patronized that company will do so the day before and the day after so while they might have a slow business day the chances are you won't hurt their profits enough for them to decide in one day to make a change to what you want.

You won't hurt there profits *at all* seeing as you're just going to go back the next day and buy whatever it is you didn't buy for that one day prior. A 1 day boycott is as stupid as it is ineffectual. -.-

What's even funnier is when they do it with gas, they will just buy whatever gas they would have bought the next day.

One day boycotts are all over the place, I just tend not to notice them, the only one I was aware of was when 'the internet went dark' one wednesday due to SOPA, thing is it was webcomics thatguywiththeglasses and a few other sites I went to that were protesting, I never checked the big guns like google and amazon, youtube was up, just a few of my programs were 'dark' or running total buscuits SOPA video.

If google amazon ebay and youtube had decided to be dark, even if you had a book mark to a youtube channel or something acting as if they had been blacklisted, people might have taken notice, xkcd's wednesday comic was black with a protest message or SOPA take down message, but only in the size of the comic page not a fake take down. had it been on a Tuesday or Thursday or weekend the off day for alot of comics, it would not affect their traffic.

So I could say I'm boycotting Esso, Texaco, Shell et all but in reality I don't have a car or the need for petrol.
Friday and Saturday I boycotted HMV, only cos I was working all sodding day, but I will go in there Monday or Tuesday to get that box set if they still have stock.

Yeah plentiful as they are they are ineffective as people just buy a day early or late and the world just keeps on turning as if nothing changed, because basically nothing did due to it.

The only one I've heard of is the gas thing that comes up every year. It's such a waste, and it really irks me that so many people take it seriously.

Yeah, the only ones I've ever heard of were gas boycotts, and they were one day, seemingly like once a month or every so many months for the past few years. "Don't Buy Gas on Friday" or whatever.

For the record, wikipedia went dark, and that was a pretty big deal. The purposes of that event weren't so much to "boycott" anything as to raise awareness, like Wikipedia only left open their article on SOPA and what was wrong with it, and provided links to find out who your congresspeople were so you could contact them. It did raise a ton of awareness - I can't remember how many millions of people went to Wikipedia that day and saw the blackout - so I would say that particular instance was a success.

Furthermore, Google thought about blacking out, but they decided not to, probably because that would've just destroyed the internet. They did put a black bar over their logo with links to SOPA information, though. Mozilla did the same thing.

Aye it was more a raise awareness day than a boycott, but no one was inconvienenced enough to feel the sting of what could come of it.
Google going down and killing the internet, well that even for an hour could send a strong message to those pushing for the bill, one tweeted that he was killing time in the hearing on the internet.

Aside from Wiki, no one of importance afaik did anything and all users got was "oh noes I cant look at pictures of cats with stupid captions on them today elebenty."
