  • Nepotism

Not in the strictest of definitions, but just the more general one - incorporating family and friends.

Where I work is the most unprofessional place I've ever worked, and it really is who you know is more important... well - it's the only thing that's important!

Once again, I come in, and I see the same person asked to do the same role (floorwalk) - even though they are, relatively speaking, crap - in comparison to many other people here. And these are people who have only worked here a relatively short time...but they're going out with the person actually in charge.

    <sigh>
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Yup. It's all about who you know and who you...

One of the benefits of working for a larger company is that they tend not to have this degree of nepotism. It then becomes a trade-off, finding a company with the optimum balance of favortism and corporate mismanagement.

Well, from what I've seen, it goes from promoting crappy family members to promoting crappy friends.

I agree on how much it sucks.

My last job, a supervisor position opened. Lots of people applied for it. 3 of them had been with the company over 5 years and had started out in that other dept and knew how to do the job very well.

Who got the job, a girl in the lowest lvl entry position that had worked as a temp for 6 months then hired on as full time for 3 months before the supervisor posistion came up.

And why? She playes softball with the VP's daughter

There is another side to this though. I currently work for my father's company, as does my sister. He is the president, but our supervisor is someone else. When I was originally hired, they had more work than people to do it, and I was looking for work.

Although I got the job because of my name, it was hard work, long hours and keeping clients happy that allowed me to keep it. My sister is also very good at her job. We have talked about what it's like working for the old man, and both of us agreed that the double standard works in the opposite direction. In order to avoid an appearance of a conflict of interest, we have to work harder than other people.

I don't know if this is what generally happens regarding this issue, and if it works the other way, that really sucks for the people that get turned down for a job or promotion.

I should also say that I have no interest in being promoted at this company. I am using this as a stepping stone to bigger and better things, so maybe that affects it.

Well Roo, there is an appropriatea spect to what you said about having to work harder - the one who gets the promotion should be working harder!

But I also agree. We had a position open up, and one person who had basically been doing the job as an assistant (ie - doing it all) was turned down because of a friendship she had, and the appearance of not making it a silver platter... too bad she would have been the best for the job!

So... once it starts, it is pretty hard to stop it - in both directions (unless you've got someone who really has the guts to admit they made a mistake!)
