  • People that Constantly Tell You Moves

I go a board game group on Wednesday nights. For the most part the group is pretty good but there is one person who will constantly tell you the moves you should have made. There have been a couple times I have said, "I am playing the game....Now let me play the game". Next time, I'm tempted to say, "If you want to play everyone's game, then play alone."

I don't mind the occasional helpful advice when I am learning the game but the constant, "Oh you should do this or you should do that" is annoying. The whole point of playing a game is to learn what to do and what not to do. It is much easier to learn what not to do to make the mistakes on your own.

Worse if they give bad advice.

What Gene Rayburn sometimes told Match Game audiences was not to shout out answers because they might be wrong, and then they'd just cost the contestant $5000.

For a board game... even if the move itself is a good idea, *you* might not do as well from there as you would have the other way, and even if you'd have lost anyway, you now have someone else to blame

I sometimes have that problem when I play Pen and Paper RPGs due to my liking of "unusual" builds. It gets annoying but sometimes you find a viable strategy that those complaining never thought about.

That's why, I never want to game with hubs' childhood friends ever again. When I was really into D&D 3.0/3.5, and went to the conventions to play the Living CampIgns, I had a female Elf rogue. Yeah, she could backstabbing. However, because she was specifically a wood Elf, she wasn't strong & by 8th level she only had like 28 hit points. She had a short bow which was her favored weapon of choice. So, because she was not a meat shield, I'd have her in the back. She could "back stab" from 30 feet with her bow. That was my preferred method as my bow was like a d8 or d10 or something like that (it was higher than a d4). Plus, I'd get an extra 3d6 for damage so I was more effective with my bow than my dagger OR my +3 magical rapier. However, the guys would argue with me all the time & told hubs they hated gaming with me. Be ause you know, I was a girl who thought for myself.

        Sheesh.

Sorry for that long diatribe, but it still pisses me off. They thought because I was a girl, they could control my character. I was just being contrary. And hubs wonders why I can't stand these people.

I thought this was going to be about random people that like to teach you karate. Ever met one of those people?

God yes, those are really annoying.

some even insist on teaching "moves' to people with a lot more experience than they have

In the crowd I used to hang with, the line was "No kibitzing." If they were complaining about moves they didn't approve of, we'd sometimes alter it to "No kibitching."

It seems to be a trend with the games like Puerto Rico or Caylus where there is the optimal move and a bunch of sub optimal moves. Some of these players play alot and base their plan on the expected moves, so if someone tries something different that messes up their strategy. I mean if they want to play a game where they decide all the moves, maybe they should just play with themselves.

I'm sure they do that too.
