I had an Ethics/World Religions professor (two separate classes, same guy) who just absolutely drove me bonkers. He was a feminist who called his girlfriend his life partner and often went on rants about how men oppress women. When he read passages from the books/essay/whatnot that he assigned, he always changed the he to she and man to woman. It really messed with my flow trying to follow along with him -.-'

He also held himself the highest authority on everything regarding his classes and no one, absolutely no one, knew anything more than him. If anyone had a disagreement with his beliefs, he would laugh at them and tell him how wrong they are.

I wound up giving up on his classes, because, to be honest, I didn't have the patience to deal with that man any longer.

Oh, boy, rant ahead. Well, I'm posting it anyway:

I have a teacher right now that actually belittled us for not being read up on certain current events so that we could discuss them in class... in a business writing class. With nothing about discussions of current events on the syllabus. We're not even talking about business and economics current events, like when the US's loan rating was downgraded. They expect you to read the Wall Street Journal here. No, I'm talking about, like, that gun thing in Florida. You know the one I mean, the one with the guy. When I said that I wasn't discussing it because I never heard of it, she at first didn't believe me and thought I was trying to get out of participating, then just decided I lived under a rock. (Yes, she said that. "I guess you must live under a rock.") No, I just don't play the news-as-entertainment game. Hey, teach, what big victory was just won for autistic students in Howard County? Oh, you don't know? Oh, what's that? It doesn't matter? Well, I guess you're right- gun laws for states I don't live in matter far more than laws for people with disabilities that I have in places where I live. I'm sure that the AOL newsfeed knows what I need to know to get through life.

Or things that technically DO affect me, like when she was going on and on about the new health care bill "Literally THE most important thing going on right now. It affects everyone in this room." Sorry, lady, but the only way my life is changing is I'm getting cut back at work so they don't have to offer me benefits. I checked- we're already pretty set for insurance as is, so I didn't sit down and study the other ten million things this bill will do that have no influence on me directly, so I could focus on the ten million little things I need to know to get through the day. Oh, and by the way: THIS IS A BUSINESS WRITING CLASS. Not a let's-all-discuss-what-the-teacher-read-in-the-paper-this-morning class. The syllabus says we're going over memos today. Can we fucking do that instead of belittling me?

My favorite was, "Don't you watch TV?" "I watch things ON the TV, but like DVDs and cartoons off the DVR." "Well, what about the Internet?" "I'm on the Internet all the time- you're not allowed to discuss gun control in Webkinz World." Then she said something about new laws for e-readers, followed by: "Oh, I forgot. You guys don't read books." I literally had to squeeze my mouth shut to keep from saying, "Bitch, I DO read books. If the law was JUST PASSED, it's going to take a while for them to write a book about it."
"So, my little Zillians... Have your fun, as long as I let you have fun... but don't forget who is the boss!"
We are contented, because he says we are
He really meant it when he says we've come so far

When I took American Politics, our professor had each of us get a subscription to Newsweek (we were able to get a bulk rate through the university) so that we could stay up-to-date on current events. Which is appropriate for a class on politics, not so much in business writing.

Side note: I remember discussing an article about a new up-and-coming politician from Illinois who was making a lot of waves...my professor said, "This man will be President within the next decade." Lo and behold....

MrsEclipse: She doesn't just sound opinionated, she sounds like a smug elitest bitch! She has no right to judge you just because you're not keeping track of certain events.

Even at that, nobody could possibly read anywhere near every book that's published.
"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."
