  • Having to justify trivial things.

There are things that I should not even have to explain. Example, if I don't like sushi, I don't like it, and shouldn't have to try it. That should be the end, but some persistent people just have to make an arguement.

    "I don't like sushi"
"How do you know if you never tried it?"
"I just don't like raw food"
"Well you eat so and so and that's raw"
    "But it's not raw seafood"
"(gives reason why raw seafood is okay)"

    SHUT UP!!!!!!!

I know "because I don't like it" isn't a good answer. If I were discussing something more fratch worthy, than I can see my response being challenged. BUT IT'S GODDAMN FOOD!!! Lives are not on the line and no one is going to be drastically affected. If I had to justify every insignificant decision, I would be arguing for hours. Just because my objection to sushi is not "rational" does not mean it's worth arguing over!!!

    I totally understand your gripe.

You should never have to justify your own personal preferences.

I don't like coffee and the smell makes me want to retch. People almost universally comment, "But brewing coffee smells so good." That's great. I'm happy for you. If you wave your fresh coffee under my nose, you might just get a vomit add-in, so don't freaking do it. >_<

Feel free to ignore the next bit... my inner pedant screams for clarification...

    <pedant>
sushi =/= raw seafood - that's sashimi (not necessarily raw, and not always seafood, at that)... there's some incredibly good sushi that has nothing to do with sashimi
    </pedant>

My gf gets into lighthearted fights over my tastes. She doesn't understand how I can dislike raw carrots yet like carrot cake. Or dislike raw tomatoes yet enjoy tomato soup and tomato sauce.

My answers to each are, "Would you like to drink this syrup straight out of the bottle? No? Then why are you putting it on your pancakes if you don't like straight syrup?"

      Somehow she doesn't get it.

The kicker is she doesn't like potato chips, yet likes french fries. Somehow that inconsistency escapes her logic as well.

You don't need to justify your tastes ,but usually I do ask questions like this just because I'm curious. Like, I'm just the type of person who doesn't knock anything until I try it, so if somebody says they don't like book/movie/TV show/video game/food/whatever, I usually do ask why. I don't care whether they like it or not, but for the sake of my own edification and perspective I do like to ask why people like or dislike the things that they like.

I think you're the first person I've ever come across who, like me, doesn't like raw carrots.

I have a STRONG aversion to them. They are horrid to me. (I will eat them in soup. And I do actually love carrot cake, as well.)

Not quite as bad as pineapple though. The smell alone makes me want to gag. (I've heard of pineapple aversions before, but they're also very rare.)

I also don't like coconut. But I like Piña Coladas (not getting caught in the rain, though. ).

          Go figure.

Ask, if you like. But accept the answer, even if it's "I just don't" or "the idea repulses me too much to enjoy it no matter how good it may be" or "there are precious few horror movies I like, and zombies are my least favorite kind of monster, so I don't *have* to see the newest variation on that theme to know I won't like it."

edit: On carrots, I'm the opposite: they're great raw, so long as they're nice and fresh at least... but I just can't understand why anyone would want one cooked, unless possibly to add flavor to other things without itself actually being eaten.

well add one more to the list, it's amazing something tastes different when you cook it and stuff.

Argh! I freaking HATE people like this. My neighbor is one of them. The other night she was going on and on about some issue that we're way different on and I finally had enough and said, "Because that's what *I* like to do!" in a really shitty tone.

                Yeah, she shut up.

I'm actually allergic to raw carrots, although I can eat (and do enjoy) them cooked. It sucks for my husband, who prefers carrots raw, especially because for me, they have to be cooked thoroughly and completely until they're soft and mushy; no partly-steamed or lightly stir-fried crispy carrots for me.

Speaking of my husband, I will admit that we both did the "how can you not like that??" move on each other when we started dating. Me, in regards to his aversion to onions, and him, in regards to my aversion to coconut. I think we were both somewhat offended at the other for making kind of a big deal about it, but it did teach us to just accept "I don't like that" and move on. Whenever I make something new for dinner, I ask him what he thinks, and if he doesn't like it, I shelf the recipe (or just make it for myself for lunch, if I really enjoyed it) and don't think twice about it.

I don't like coffee either Andara. It doesn't even smell good to me.

It's one thing to ask or wonder, but when you try to argue my reasons, pestering me to try it, I get very very annoyed.

If you think it is bad with food, try doing it with sports.
"what do you mean you aren't interested in football"
I'm just not, I don't understand the appeal, but if you enjoy it, have fun with it.
"no, it's like the greatest sport ever, why can't you see that"
I watch soccer and basketball, but not football, deal with it.
Seriously, I don't get why what sports you like is such a big deal.

I'm this way about mushrooms. I haaaate mushrooms. Not due to taste but...its a FUNGUS! *shudder* Erg fungus.

As for carrots, love'em raw, can't stand them cooked. Need that cold crisp *SNAP* to them.

But yeah, I HATE this nagging attitude. I don't like fungus, cooked carrots, sports, etc. Leave me alone about it. When you sit down to watch a couple of hours of SC2 matches, then maybe I'll watch you're hand egg game.

Wow...and here I thought I had to be about the only one who doesn't like coffee. Other things I don't like, and hate explaining, include: tea (any kind, doesn't matter), most veggies when raw (yes, I AM that picky of an eater), ranch dressing, and, the one that makes me gag just at the smell: bananas, or anything banana flavored. I can't even stand banana flavored candy. Don't ask me why. I just can't! I, too, hate having to explain things to people like that!

oh wow...first off there is a huge difference in real bananas and banana flavored anything. I love bananas when they are still partially green and hate them when they are really ripe. I hate banana flavored ANYTHING.

Let's see I'll chime in on some of the other things mentioned:
Coffee...love the smell of ground beans and the smell of it brewing. Even smells good roasting (smells like hay when it's still green). But then I drink the stuff all the time JUST for the flavor.

Carrots....love them cooked but NOT mushy. I like 'em crisp. But I don't care for them raw.

Onions ...Love them, especially Walla Wallas.

                              Carrot Cake ...GAG. Blech.

Sushi -- love it so much. And Sashimi too. I was scared to try raw fish for a long time and then one day I got brave....and now I'm addicted to it. Salmon/tuna are the most flavorful and with a good sashimi sauce...oh yeah. And with sushi I keep trying new ones if I know what's in it. Big fan.

One thing I hate raw or cooked or even in my general direction ...broccoli. Smells like rotten garbage to me.

One food I flip flop on is avacado. For years I didn't care for it, or guacamole or any of that stuff. Then a couple of months ago I was craving it for about a month, and then I quit. I still eat some once in a while and I still don't have the aversion to it I used to.

As for raw vs cooked....My mother cooked beef till it was leather. Hence I like it rare now. Vegetables were cooked to mush, and most of them I prefer slightly crisp (except for potatoes or turnips or something). My mother sucked at cooking a lot of things, and was really good at other things.
