One of my weird quirks is that I love watermelon candy, but hate watermelon. Or any melon, for that matter.

Odd, I know. However, you'd think I'd dabbled in the skinning of cats as a hobby - the way some people carry on about how weird it is.

I get this with books more than food. I tell people straight off that I'm fussy, and don't bother justifiying - they get a NO and a glare and that's generally it.

But with books... "Why haven't you read X?" "Just haven't. Not interested." "Whine!! You can't know what it's like until you've read it!!"

Yes I can!! If I don't want to read it then I won't, simple as. I am beyond the age of required reading. If it's too normal a genre (i.e. real-life set, romance etc, with no trace of fantasy/sci-fi) they are generally boring to me. If they're in first person I get annoyed - really, hate it.

You can stick to your pulp novel...I've got the Horus Heresy series to reread :P

Watermelon's the only melon I like. I also love watermelon candy/snowballs. Totally different flavor, really.

        Well...do you?

Don't like yellow mustard. Do like honey mustard.

Love buttered popcorn (home made, microwave, theater 'butter'). Will spit out buttered popcorn flavored Jelly Bellies.

          Like Red Vines. Hate Twizzlers.

Tastes are intensely personal, and nobody has the right to override anyone's preference for anything as trivial as what flavor they want.

The worst part is that they're almost identical to banana ones, which I absolutely love.

One of my pet peeves is when I say I don't like a certain food, and someone asks me, "Why don't you like it?" If someone doesn't like a certain food, would common sense dictate that they don't like the taste? Are they expecting a much deeper answer, like, "My parents were killed by a stalk of broccoli when I was little!"

I got into a debate with my grandma about how I don't like chicken corn soup. She said, "You like chicken, and you like corn! Why won't you eat chicken corn soup?"

I asked her, "Do you like spaghetti?"

                "Yes."

                "Do you like ice cream?"

                "Yes."

"Would you eat both of them mixed together?"

                "No!"

                "Well, there you go!"

When the debate gets stupid like that, I usually say, "Well, that's your opinion!" and refuse to argue any further.

Not to be pedantic, but not really. Could be taste, texture, smell, the way it looks...there are a lot of reasons why you don't like a certain food. There's a lot of food where I don't mind the taste, but I hate the texture, like cauliflower, or Twizzlers.

A very good point. I like the taste of coconut, but I don't like the texture. So I like things that use coconut milk or coconut flavoring, but don't like things that use actual coconut, like Almond Joy bars.

Texture is a huge thing for me.

I'd probably love the taste of quite a number of sashimi-based sushi types, but the texture of most makes them a completely non-starter.

As for smell, I mentioned coffee before. I don't really mind the taste, much, it's just the smell I can't stand. And cooking butter will chase me out of the room, too, tho I love things that have been fried in it.

I hate people like this as well. I'm a weird one, and I will not, ever, eat my cereal with milk on it. Unless I scarf it down so fast as to give myself a stomachache, it gets mushy in the milk and that just disgusts the hell out of me. I like crunchy/crispy things. So, I eat cereal as is out of the box. I try not to do so around many people, because I'll have at least one person asking me if I'm really eating my cereal that way and why I don't like milk on it and yada, yada, yada. Drives me nuts!

I have a STRONG aversion to them. They are horrid to me. (I will eat them in soup. And I do actually love carrot cake, as well.)

Not quite as bad as pineapple though. The smell alone makes me want to gag. (I've heard of pineapple aversions before, but they're also very rare.)

I also don't like coconut. But I like PiƱa Coladas (not getting caught in the rain, though. ).

                          Go figure.
Mark me for another person who hates raw carrots but loves carrot cake. It's definitely in my top 5 favorite baked goods.

I can understand that, I tried squid once, and while it didn't taste like much I couldn't deal with the texture, it was like chewing rubber bands.

It was likely either not quite fresh or overcooked. That's a common problem with squid and octopus - it has to be fresh and properly cooked or it's like trying to eat rubber gaskets.

I'm a huge fan of calimari, but if a place doesn't do it right, it's simply inedible.

Yup. I love french fries, tater tots, baked potatoes, fried potatoes, hash browns but I hate, hate, hate mashed potatoes. The texture just makes me gag. Same thing with the french style (cut into really skinny strips) green beans. Give me whole ones and I'll eat a pound but I won't touch the french style.
