  • Trashy, in your face music

"Blow my whistle?" Seriously? Just when I think pop music can't get any lower, they come out with shameless crap like this. And it just seems to get worse and worse.

Last year, we had that god awful "Sexy and I know it" by LMFAO. I first heard about it watching Todd In The Shadows (TGWTG) review this song. The video was so in your face disgusting that I almost couldn't get through the review. From there, every time I would hear the song, all I could think of was that... video. Same thing happened when he reviewed that stupid "S and M" song by Rihanna (do not get me started on that one).

And those are just my most hated. There are thousands upon thousands of songs that are not only obnoxious as all hell, but have a similar tackiness. Like not only do they have to be "edgy" but they are fucking proud of it.

Look, I'm not saying we should censor this music. In fact, I feel quite the opposite. But just because I support peoples right to make bad music doesn't mean I have to like it. And that's why I started this thread.

The great thing about the "I'm Sexy and I know It" craze is parodies like this

My boyfriend and I constantly sing "Sexy and I Know It" together at work.

I will agree with the Flo Rida crap. I can't stand anything he makes.

I love "Sexy and I Know It" and "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO, because they're just... Fun! They don't take themselves seriously at all and they're super danceable, groovy, get-stuck-in-your-head tunes. I also loved the videos for both songs because, while I don't dress in their aesthetic, I love the style of LMFAO. I love seeing the shiny blingy poppy WOW on someone else, cause it's fun!

Now, while there are pop songs that I dislike (I agree about "Whistle"), I think that a lot of the hatred for this genre of music comes from taking it too seriously. Pop music is disposable music. It's like gum - you chew it for a while and it's good for that time, but then you throw it away and move on. It doesn't have to have substance, it doesn't have to fill you up, it's just good for the moment. So while I have favourite "deep" artists, I also indulge in a lot of these pop songs because deep musical works of art can get heavy, and sometimes I want something silly.

I like some pop music. Not a lot, but some of it. So, generally speaking...I don't listen to pop stations! I'm lucky in that I have Sirius XM for the car, but even if I didn't I'd just rely on my Zune player or CD's or something.

I've posted about my love for EDM (electronic dance music) before. I know a lot of people don't like it because it can be repetitive...missing the key word in the genre title - Dance. Most of it is meant for dancing. That doesn't mean there isn't a range - from the chill to the silly. (Even if you don't like EDM, watch that first video, it's the most ridiculous music video I've ever seen.)

My attitude toward music is - give everything a listen once, if you don't like it, then that's that. Also, mock the ridiculous. (Oh, you have a Dark Side, Kelly Clarkson? Who could've guessed!)

Yeah, I know a lot of it is not meant to be taken seriously, but that still doesn't make it any less annoying.

I wouldn't mind it so much except you hear some of these songs everywhere.

I've touched on Flo Rida's obsession with oral sex in the overplayed songs thread. While I'm hardly a prude, I find his constant lyrical trash pretty disgusting and it's to the point of demeaning, to me anyways. Does he even have any songs without references to blow jobs? It started a few years ago when he did the god-awful 'remake'/cover of Spin Me Round, which sounded fine in the original version, thank you very much.

Sexy And I Know It bothered me at first but grew on me after a while. The video, I'll agree, is really, um . . . WOW. Not attractive to say the least, but LMFAO have outrageous as a kind of signature feature.

The trouble with edginess, pushing the envelope, shock value, whatever is that there's no point at which you don't have to keep going further. At least, it's a problem when the line you have to set a toe across is how crass for its own sake you can be.

See, I have no problem with Sexy and I Know It. Partially because it was my office's theme song (The acronym for my office when pronounced how it is spelled sounds like "sexy".) Partially because it's catchy, partially because it's an actually well done piece of music.

Flo Rida on the other hand, while catchy, is just trashy. His whistle song literally is just about getting a blowjob and that's just trash.

Hahaha we have a regular customer, whose last name is Sexe (pr. sexy), who my manager at the store I used to work at used to sing "I'm sexy and I know it" to, just to get a laugh out of him. What? It IS his name, after all.

LMFAO's songs are generally OK. I've found myself singing along to "Party Rock Anthem" in the car a few times.

Flo Rida....yeah, trashy. Admittedly, I did like "Wild Ones" which he did with Sia. He did also appear in "Running Back" (Jessica Mauboy) and a Justice Crew song that escapes me at the moment. >.> As a solo artist, he's trashy as all hell though

I like "Right Round" a bit. "Wild Ones" is ok.

Two Chainz and Nicky Minaj ("Starships" I can stand for a while) can just die, though.

And music quality is only going down from there.
