  • Fake Job Ads

    Yes. You read THAT right!

You might know I'm currently between jobs due to some Morons in Management but that's not what I'm raging about here. Around in the Boston area, craigslist is an amazing source for job ads as long as you pay attention to the things that are being said. Also not a lot of companies post in the paper anymore since craigslist is way cheaper and reaches far more people who are actually looking for jobs.

I've noticed in the immediate Boston area, this one three letter company (let's just call it OAF) has a ton of ads. That's not bad really, maybe they have a lot of openings. Then I noticed "All of the OAF ads are open positions or positions that we usually fill..."

WHOA. Yup folks, they put up job ads based on what they've filled before - or claimed to - even if they don't have any companies looking for those positions right now. Yes, OAF is a staffing company. I went and looked into their reviews and received a ton of negative commentary about how they don't care about what you are looking for and just try to force you to take the first job that comes along, even if you feel unqualified or uncomfortable doing it. Or, a lot of people were just straight up ignored, even after trying to contact their "OAF Rep" through multiple means.

So they throw up (I counted) roughly ten or so fake ads every day, trying to trick people into sending them their resume and then they call and harass them about coming in for an interview so that they can find their perfect job! They don't mention the job you actually applied for (probably because it doesn't exist and they know it) and keep bothering you to come in and take a test, etc.

Yeah, I'm very bothered by this. Maybe I shouldn't be, but I am. It makes me angry.

Can I join you in the bothered pile? I got loads of these when I was out of work last. All of them fake ads for agency work. Who then don't bother to call you.

Also I got pissed off when the local council job site kept posting jobs that had INTERNAL ONLY!!! posted all over them. I know they have login-only areas for existing workers...they don't need to dangle the basic administrator jobs they're feeding their redeployees into for £6 a bloody hour in front of outsiders' noses! Some dick made it illegal to not post these publically...why should you, when the public can't apply for them!

Oh that's reminding me of all the ads I see with "ENTRY LEVEL POSITION" plastered all over them and then you look at the requirements and it stats "3-5 years previous experience required."

Thanks jerk! That's NOT entry level. Entry level implies that you do not need previous experience as you are, OMG, just entering. Blah!

Count me in the bothered pile as well, especially with the so-called entry positions. How is 3+ years 'required' experience considered ENTRY LEVEL?

If OAF is the agency I'm thinking of, I dealt with them a few years ago and got jerked around big-time. I see an ad that sounds perfect (that in itself should have been a giveaway), set up an interview, and then get told "oh, we don't actually have this position open but we do have [positions I'm either overqualified for, or nowhere near my chosen field]." (did you even LOOK at my resume?!) Then try to talk me into taking lower-skilled positions.

They also had a phone bank of sorts in view of the reception/testing area, and once in awhile a bell would ring and people would start cheering. I could see a lot of people taking the computerized tests were pissed off by this.

Well, the *job* is entry-level type work. They just don't want anyone who's actually *entering* that area. Bringing buggies in from the parking lot is something anyone can do, but if it's possible to get someone who's been doing it for years for the same price, they'll still go for experience.

              I go on reporting sprees.

When I moved last year, I was looking for furniture. Most of the ads in the furniture section are actually for movers, and I must have reported about a hundred of them. >_<

If the won't except someone just entering the profession, then it's not an entry-level position. It's an experienced position doing entry level work.

I get that some people want experience over some one new, but to flaunt "ENTRY LEVEL POSITION" is purposefully misleading. Because while it may be equivalent to "entry level work" it's not an "entry level position." (They also might be chasing away the experience they want, because ENTRY LEVEL also implies less pay, so someone with experience might just skip over it.)

I sort of had a reverse thing happen to me. At one point when I was job searching, I posted a publicly viewable resume on a job site. The resume in question was specifically tailored to a professional career minded job.

I started getting tons of calls and emails (my email address was on the resume as well) from companies want me to do debt collection, insurance sales, commission only sales, part time retail and a bunch of other junk I didn't care for.

My resume has been private ever since.

I got quite a few of those when I was looking for work after college. I don't know about other areas, but here, temp agencies are (IMHO) a waste of time. Too many promises, stupid "placement tests," and other bullshit. Sorry, but fuck that. I still get a couple of "job" ads from them, and I don't even bother. If they can't even give me an address (they're usually P.O. boxes), I can't give them my resume and time.

Salt Lake has the problem of fake ads that are from scammers trying to get you to give them your private information... they post an ad for a job that seems to good to be true, you apply for it, they email you saying that you are one of their top candidates, but due to problems they have had in the past they now require all serious applicants to provide a credit score from a website that they give you that will ask for all your personal information (name, date of birth, social, credit card number, etc) and then never get back to you (unless you consider seeing your limited money disappear getting back to you). I mark those for spam as often as I can.
My personal gripe is the staffing agencies that tell you that they have secured a position with a company for you, then call you the day before you are supposed to start and say "just kidding, we hired too many people, but we'll gladly find another position for you"... yeah, now that I've been two weeks of not filling out applications and you know that I'm dependent on you to find me something... except you don't actually have anything, you've only screwed both of us because of all the money they've spent on background checks etc. I know why recruiters do it, they get commission based on how many people they get to sign up with the company and they want their commission and the companies aren't doing anything to stop them.

It is a sick and twisted system, I couldn't agree more. I went through it when I moved here (and put a lot of posts on CS about it) and I may have to go through it again much sooner than I would've liked.
