    since this is fratching-
Lasik is not the "wonder surgery" the peope making the money off it claim-the FDA was considering outlawing it in 2008, yes it's that bad 35,000 people per year are "bad outcomes"-which can include, constant pain, blindness, WORSE vision(and after LASIK, contacts are NOT an option), glare, halos, starbursts and generally poor vision at night. You only get one set of eyes, don't risk them.

I started needing eye correction when I was nine (fourth grade). I would love to once again know what it is like to be able to see without any kind of correction.

I got contacts when I was thirteen (summer before eighth grade). I continued wearing contacts until I was twenty-two. I went back to glasses because the contacts were drying out in my eyes (even the ones that aren't supposed to dry out). I tried contacts again back in 2008, but I only stayed on them for a few days before going back to my glasses. Maybe I look better without glasses, but frankly, it's much more comfortable to just wear glasses instead of fooling with contacts. Reading, especially. It got to where reading with my contacts made my eyes dry and itchy.

I've been thinking about corrective surgery, but I'm still a little skittish about it. Besides, I probably can't afford it, anyway.

Add me to the "no contacts" group. I've had to wear glasses since I was 14. Being nearsighted sucks, and being stuck behind a computer all day...doesn't help matters. Still, I've kept the glasses--too many instances of my dad having problems with his allergies and contacts years ago kinda turned me off to the idea. Plus, I also build things, and even though I wear goggles in the workshop, I don't like the idea of that grit finding its way under a contact!

The problem is that no matter what you do, you're still going to be wrong. Wear contacts and the "contacts screw up your eyes" people go into collective apoplexy. Wear glasses and you get people telling you that glasses suck and that you should get contacts.

Or you could not lose all of your friends and alienate all of your coworkers by saying something more polite, like "I've already made my decision, and with all due respect, I didn't ask your opinion" and move on after realizing it's not worth yelling at people over it. Just saying....

I don't hate contacts, but would never wear them. I have glasses that I think I look good in and I have issues with the thought of putting my finger in my eye. I can't even get EYE DROPS in my eyes.

My mother was (IIRC, I was only about seven at the time) one of those who tested the use of contact lenses, to see how well they did in humans. The hours she had to spend in the bathroom with multiple evil-smelling fluids, having to keep them as clean as a science lab, and her always red and itchy eyes turned me off for life!!

XD Even though I know it's not like that now, I'd rather stick with me gigs ^^

Ah, if that would only work in this day and age.

Back in the great and glorious days before the internet, people weren't a bunch of Know-it-alls simply because they happen to see someone posting something that may or may not be true on their Facebook wall. They actually knew something because they read it from a credible source such as "The New England Journal of Medicine" or Popular Science or Discovery magazine.

Now we live in an age where everyone is an expert on something because something that their mother's brother's cousin's uncle's niece's third cousin's former roommate posted on Twitter. And as a result of the upswing in know-it-all-edness, it is now one of the top three major faux pas that we can make in society. These are the big ones. I refer to of course...
                  • Disagreeing with someone
                  • Unfriending someone from Facebook

                  And the big one
                  • Not accepting a friend request.

That one will get you killed if the story of Lashawndra Harris is to be believed (the jury is still out on that one).

But not agreeing with someone, even if done politely will still alienate you from your friends in this day and age. Hell look at the last election. Parents were disowning their children for not wanting to vote for the same candidate as them.

And the reverse was also true.

Then there are all the people who get butthurt and de-friend people from Facebook and not talk to their real-life friends because one of the two of them think that guns are the reason that events like Sandy Hook occur and the other thinks that a lack of mental health care is the reason.

There are reports in local police blotters about fights between friends over that shit.

Hell! Look at the discussion I got into about smart phone security. Since I didn't change my ways and instantly go out and buy an Android phone, I got my ass ripped into over it. I got chewed so many assholes I could shit in a 360 degree arc.

All because I tried to simply say that I'm an IT guy and I'm aware of risk assessments on the security of the phones on the market and could deal with them if I developed problems.

So when you are nice and people yell, scream, bitch, and call you a fucking retard for not agreeing with them...why not at least have the satisfaction of mutually assured annihilation?

Why should I be the only one with hurt feelings?

The first time I got contacts I hated them. They always itched, felt sticky, or just felt weird. It wasn't long before I was back to glasses. Then I was working for USPS and had to get a new eye doctor. When he suggested contacts I hemmed and hawed till he got me to tell him what I felt with the others. Well it took going between three brands before I picked some that I couldn't feel.

He then sent me home with five different cleaning solutions. The first one I tossed after soaking the contacts for one night. The second one I gave the recommended week but was still having issues. The third one lasted all day and was even easy to remove my contacts at night. But I had two more solutions so I have them their time and went back to that third one. So sometimes it's trial and error to find what's good.

I am pretty much in the same boat. I get squicky at the thought of eye drops and I can't even wear eyeliner.

I also have a very high prescription for my glasses.

And yet, people preach to me that contacts are going to "ruin" my eyes, scratch them all up, make me go blind (I want to know where all these fucktards when to eye doctor school), cost me far too much money, and why can't I wear glasses like everyone else?
is any of that coming from your insurance company or the optometrist? if it is, i suspect it's really a $$$ thing rather than an actual health issue. the exams and contact lenses cost more than glasses in the long run IIRC.

                        and lasik…
one of my friends tried convincing me that I HAD to have it done. and how good it was. And how she tricked one of her friends into getting it done - got him at the doctor's and relaxed… and suddenly it turned out to be lasik surgery, and how he finally gave in and was happy.

Personally i'd have been pretty pissed off if anyone did that to me. I don't want my eyes poked at, no matter how safe it is. part of it is fear of them screwing up and leaving me blind or with night-time halo-vision. and part of it is me wondering, well what if I lose my close-up vision?

cos right now with glasses or contacts on, i can see stuff in the distance better, but it's harder for me to read tiny print - like markings on earrings. but i can still read them if i take my eyewear off… i can read tiny print stuff that others have a hard time seeing. i'd rather not have that ability lost just for the convenience of not wearing glasses.

I think I actually look *better* with glasses. With glasses on I'm the polite Canadian everyone asks for directions. If I take them off, little old ladies avoid eye contact and no one dares speak to me >.>

But yeah I'm in the same boat when it comes to contacts. I hate even having to get an eyelash out of my eye. I hate even having anything near them. Having to dig around in them daily to get a lens in and out <shudder>.

I'm so used to it, it doesn't even phase me anymore. Only the colored ones drive me insane.

I will only wear my glasses at home. I can't drive with them, because I can't see well in them because I'm not used to glasses. I look like such a fat faced girl in them, I can barely stand it.

That is more of a risk for eye damage than actually wearing contacts.
Our eyes contain bacteria, on the surface of the cornea. Corneas need oxygen. Depending on the type of lenses you are using, the amount of oxygen provided by them to your cornea varies. When the bacteria increase to a noticeable number, we blink, so that a film of water wipes our corneas clean, and removes the bacteria. We blink often, so you can imagine how fast the bacteria grow.

When you wear contact lenses, it puts a cover on the cornea, trapping the bacteria on its surface, and reducing the oxygen supply to it. If you leave the lenses on for too long, it may give the bacteria enough time to settle down and start an infection or a disease. This is exactly what you do when you wear your contacts for more than the stipulated amount of time - you aid the bacteria in spoiling your eyes. At night we do not blink or keep our eyes open, so the oxygen supply is reduced, so imagine the scenario if you are sleeping with lenses! In such cases, it is best to use the correct type of lenses, since sleeping with the wrong type of lenses will severely damage your eyesight.

                              Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

I tried contacts once, but found it way too fiddly and took up too much time; in short, I was too lazy to do contacts and prefered to just shove my specs on and go.

Also, I am very very short sighted so if I was only wearing contacts and lost one, I'd be basically fucked cuz I can't see a thing without my glasses. In any case, my glasses look good on me. XD
