  • Coke bottles

Coke LOVES to put all of their products in contoured bottles. I can understand their flagship product, but Sprite/Root Beer/Iced Tea? Of course, the price of having contoured (rather than cylindrical, the way Pepsi and "house brand" sodas do) bottles is that to have the same capacity, it needs to be a bit taller.

Because of this, a 2 litre Pepsi bottle will fit properly on the top shelf of my fridge, but to fit a 2 litre Coke bottle I'd need to move the top shelf down one notch, meaning the next shelf down wouldn't be able to hold 2 tubs of cottage cheese on top of each other, or a cheese bar under the crisper. Similarly, 710 ml Pepsi bottles fit crosswise in one of the bins, but 710 ml Coke bottles have to go diagonally, reducing the number that the bin will hold.

Of course, this has an effect on which brand I buy. Haven't the executives given any thought to what customers DO with their product, and the negative impact it could have on the company?

It's probably just easier to put all of their products in one bottle style instead of having to make two, and adjust assembly lines to cater to two different bottle styles.

They do consider it... but the slight height difference isn't going to affect many people, especially when (assuming you put the cap back on) you can lay the bottle down. Brand recognition and continuity, on the other hand, is their biggest asset.

Not an issue in the UK, the seldom seen glass bottles and perhaps the 330ml or whatever plastic ones seen in the £3 lunch deals at two big name supermarkets are shaped.
The 1.75 might be shaped, that or it's just shorter than the 2L, which is the same mould as god knows how many bottles NOT made by Coca-Cola schweps.

I think the only Coke I buy anymore is the glass-bottled kind from Mexico. Aside from that it's been Moxie, Pepsi products, Adirondack, and Inca Kola; and that's only when I drink soda.

What surprises me is that Pepsi hasn't come up with their own distinctive bottle shape. The contoured 2L bottles do their job; as the OP demonstrates, they divide the soda aisle into "Coke" and "Pepsi and generic."

That's weird... here in SoCal, all of the 2liter bottles are the same. It's the 1 liter and down that Coke uses their stylized contoured bottle shape.

Umm.... Where do you buy your 2 litre bottles? They all look exactly the same to me, regardless of brand or bottler.

We were at Costco and I noticed the multi-pack of plastic-bottled Coke was in the shaped bottles.

But those were 20oz or even 1 litre bottles. OP said 2 litre.

No. The bottles I'm talking about were 2 liters. I wouldn't have bothered to mention them were they the smaller ones.

They sell 2 Litres in multi-packs? I've seen them in shipping carton-type trays/holders where you can pull individually or take the tray, but never as a multi-pack.

You can buy 4-packs of 2 liters of Coke at Costco.

I'd link to it, but I can't copy and paste and I'm not going to do it manually.

We have the shaped bottles down here where I live. Not a huge deal cause we lay them down, if we do end up getting a 2L. Never fits in the fridge, no matter the bottle type.
