  • Blocked by Netgear Firewall

This has been an ongoing issue for about a year now, the land lord was told about it but nothing seems to have happened, one housemate got his own broadband to avoid the whole issue and once I'm back in employment I'll probably do the same.

Many years ago when I first moved in, none of us had broadband, then one or two took up Virgin Media and defaulted on the bills, eventually leading the house to be blacklisted.

One guy wanted Net and to get around this issue he had an agreement with the land lord to have it installed under his name and have it tacked onto his rent.
He moved out and the contract was cancelled.

couple upstairs wanted broadband (I was using one of those £15 15gb mobile dongles and had been for over a year or two by this point due to said black list) but could not, so they themselves talked to the land lord and instead of doing the same as the previous tenant in another room, he said he would reactivate the fibre optic line and make it a shared network inclusive in the rent.

Cheapest package now is something like £30, even if you don't use it you pay for it as it is now a utility like gas and electric, split 6 ways its about a quid a week, so you wont notice it nor did the rent increase due to it.

As the router is in someone's room and not the hall way, should it need resetting after a power outage or something, if he's not in, we are without net.

At some point the big streaming sites for porn got nuked, not by the ISP, but by him, at first it was just bla bla bla .com etc, and it didn't matter there were others not blocked.

Then I started to find myself not able to read news articles that had porn in the url, this site might also be affected.

He came round today for rent and I told him what was going on and it should be sorted.

I googled porn, fine google works, didn't want to show him blocked porn sites as that wasn't the issue, I wanted to show him what happened when I clicked a liked titled "HIV scare as porn actor contracts virus" as the newspaper's website had the headline as the title as do a few other sites (eg reddit) it came up blocked.

"This is the independent a newspaper, not page 3 of the sun." I told him.

"This is Wikipedia I search porn and it's blocked."

I saw a documentary last year or so on a Hollywood STD clinic that catered to porn actors and they screened one actor after coming back from a bareback shoot in brazil, first test came back clear, he did 5 films before the second more thorough test showed that he in fact did have HIV/AIDS and everyone he had sex with and their partners had to be tested.

"This is CDC levels we are on about, it's not just Ebola where people move into action."

I also told him that if I was using the net of someone who was paying the bills and they were doing this, well their net their rules, but I am paying 1/6th of the bill, if he doesn't want to stumble across porn, fine, he should block his own laptop not the router.

"What he's done is basically 'I need a new door lock' and instead of changing the lock on his room, he's changed the lock on the front and back doors of the house."

I know he's in as I heard his TV an hour before land lord came round and just heard his door now, but land lord left saying he would talk to him but instead just went downstairs and back home.

I might talk to guy upstairs about chipping in on his bill and running my Ethernet up the stairs, I have issues with WiFi, I've never used it on this network, but everyone else who was using it had to ask for the name and password at least once a month as he would change them on a whim and not tell anyone.

I can for the most part, live without streaming porn, but I do not like the fact I cant comment on a thread about Movember cos the url is "Do you like my porn stache?"

    Update:

Had to nip out before somewhere shut at 2 and was on the loo when I overheard one of the other guys complaining about speed (wifi user) and that land lord was round and I "Was writing a thesis on porn", I had said that cos wiki would come up blocked when searching porn I did say "What if I wanted to research more about this news article and found all avenues blocked cos porn is in the url, if it said website/articles/year-month-dayarticleid.htm it would be fine.

So I said through the door, its not just porn sites hes blocking, I cant read the independent or daily mails article on this cos it comes up blocked. (don't normally read either but seeing 2 fresh articles on the front page just warranted a click to prove to land lord).

I could hear the guy saying he's locked out of things and cant access XYZ, but no one else could even do that as you need to physically mess with the router and he's the only one with the software serial number etc to enter in the values. Even if I got a netgear admin tool, I don't think I could fix his cockups without knowing some of the physical details.

As I said to the landlord and perhaps in my previous post, the town of Scunthorpe was blocked for swearing when ISP's were new for domestic use.

Got back and porn is still blocked, but the two articles and reddits earth porn sub are unblocked.

I'll call that a win, but I told land lord instead of giving him 3 cheques to clear me till april first, hes only getting jan's, the promptness of the others depends on how shit the net is in future.

On way to where I was going I though about a bypass, some sites that have spaces in the urls go %20 or something, I could probably find the values for letters and have them gobbledegooked to see if anything happens.

But TBH I don't know if he can see what I access site wise or owt from the router, so he might then look at %23%66%12%88 and then block that.

TLDR guys a bit religious and power tripping as the internet gate keeper just cos the router is in his room.

Router needs to be moved, if at all possible. Preferably to somewhere easier for everybody to access if necessary. Hell, I have our router out in the living room by the main TV so that whoever is home can reset it in the event of a power outage or if the box needs to be replaced at some point. The connection point is in my bedroom, but I have run a cable from that connection point to where the router/modem sits - it's a DSL modem/touter so a regular phone cable works just fine.

We said that to land lord, not seen the connection so no idea if a Ethernet cable and plug it into the hall would suffice.

We brought the issue of him being on holiday for a week and it going off whilst he was away (think we got him to open up the room but I was at work so no idea) and he said the ISP would charge £50 or so to move it. If its just an Ethernet cable under the door you can get one for way less than that.

Just got off the phone with land lord, he called me after getting off from Router guy, he denies doing anything but he did reset it and was saying he was locked out of it himself (how don't know) but land lord is not tech savvy, so he bought what he said.

So far internet is rated 15 or T for teen, we can talk about it but not watch it.
He asked if anyone had ever brought it up to him, before they got their own line they did speak to him and he denied doing anything. I didn't bring it up prior as those innocent threads were few and far between and I would normally stumble upon them at 2am and I'm not going to knock on his door at that hour and by the time I see him next I have forgotten I wanted to post about some ones porn stash movember pic, but it was only fresh in my mind as I tried to click on a reddit thread and got blocked last night and he was coming round today.

I told him I can live without streaming porn (mostly cos I had a few that were not blocked but I didn't tell him that) but if I didn't get a blocked message last night I would not have even brought it up as an issue, as they are so few and far between and normally pointless posts to not warrant bringing it up to land lord. but loosing Wikipedia due to words going into room 101 well that's a pisser.

This is like a roommate who happens to have the fuse box in his room deciding which parts of the house have electricity, or one next to the water heater deciding when you can take a shower.

Another site is blocked, this time not by the net gear fire wall but some other thing, think it was openDNS.

Website is a web comic that is NSFW, but hardly something to wank over when it came to nudity.

Just went to check up on it now (3am UK time) but as it's so late I don't want to be that guy who knocks on the door at this hour, tempting as it is.

Gonna send land lord a text saying "It's late, so I'm not going to knock on his door, but he's at it again."

Brother just checked the site and it works fine, he's on the same ISP as me, so I think he's basically checking what sites everyone in the house is visiting (if routers do give out that information, but he's the one with all the admin tools so I don't see why not).

Flexible parental controls that protect every Internet-connected device in your home, instantly

When you set up OpenDNS Home on your router, your settings take effect across everything on your home network. In addition to computers, this includes your kids’ Xbox, Playstation, Wii, DS, iPad, and even their iPhone. Learn More
So it's not something he can hand wave away as "I was protecting my laptop." this one states from the get go it works at the router so anything that connects via Wi-Fi would be blocked.

who'se name is on the bill? I'm just adsking, as I CAN see some reason to block certain sites from being accessed over the shared network. ( specifically, anything that could cause legal action /get the guy's computer siezed)

but yeah, at it's mots basic, this guy is now actively trying to restrict what people can look at on the internet. That strikes me as somehting that really should not be decided arbitrarily by one guy when everyone contributes towards the bill.

Land lord pays the bill out of our all inclusive rent.

It's in his room as they guy who lived there prior had fibre optic installed, I could survive lack of streaming porn sites, but I took issue to sites being blocked due to porn in the url, eg "bbc.co.uk/news/porn_story" or "reddit.com/rpics/check_out_my_movember_porn_Stash".

Had the land lord said at the time that he wanted XY and Z blocked, then it wouldn't be an issue, I gave him enough opens to confirm this, but he didn't bite. I said "if he was paying the bills and I was using it, then I would abide by any filters as I was not paying, but if I was paying a part of the bill I would not like it what so ever."

I suggested that he had perhaps tried to porn safe his laptop, but instead of protecting his laptop he's gone full on gatekeeper by accident, though both I and the guy I am considering chipping in for his line (he got fed up of his fuckwittery ages ago) are convinced its intentional as he's very religious and in the whole "no sex before marriage" and thinks anyone looking at titties is a sinner.

I was gonna ask him about it yesterday, but the only time I heard him about was just as he was off out.

He cant hid behind the whole "I didn't touch it, I don't know what's going on" when it's a 3rd party app installed doing it.

even if his aim was to porn-safe his laptop, he's going the wrong way about it. Patental controls ont he router affect everyone- which is the issue.

But yeah, all thigns considered? it's almost certain this is him attempting to impose his morality on the rest of the household. That is, quite frnakly, not on. That router needs to come out of his room, have the connection rewired to the common area, and quite frnakly? the admin password needs to be changed, and him not have the new one. ( because he's shown he can't be trusted not to abuse admin access to the router)

I believe it was said earlier the cost of moving the line is prohibitive.

But all anyone needs to do to avoid porn on their own computer that nobody else uses is not to go to those sites.

Once I'm back on the work force (still living off my redundancy) I will get my own net, not cos I want porn back, I want my net unrestricted unless it's the government fucking everyone over and not just some tool.

So far it's only affected one NSFW comic I read, its rarely updated but a pain to read on my phone.

Though if it does get moved and him locked out of dicking with it, would give sole admin to the guy who has his own broadband, I would subtle hint about blocking anything to do with Christianity just for shits and giggles.

Then again the thought of getting him a subscription to hard-core gay porno's crossed my mind, but I'm not willing to spend money on porn unless it's for myself and I have not needed to buy a magazine in years.

For shits and giggles I decided to see what retailers would be blocked.

                            Ann Summers, blocked.
Half a dozen sex toy sites from google search blocked.
Though Ebay with sex toy didn't come a cropper.

The only one not blocked that I tried was Victoria's Secret.

So if I was in the market of buying something as a gift or for myself, well online sales are out of the question.

So does not turning off the block when you want to use it, if you're the one who has control of it.
