  • Elephants on the roof

My apartment complex is currently getting the roof replaced. (3rd time in 6 years apparently.) This would not be a problem except that I'm on the top floor and currently unemployed. Which means I am supposed to be able to sleep in, except I can't because there are elephants on the roof. Elephants with power tools.

For the next 3 weeks, I will be woken up with tradies on the roof replacing all the sheeting and putting up solar panels.

Tomorrow they have a crane to put all the supplies onto the roof above my apartment. This has meant for the last week, they have been reinforcing the roof to hold the extra weight. They have been on the outside of the roof, which is fine, but also in between the roof and my ceiling.

And twice they have dislodged the access panel between my apartment and the inside of the roof. The panel that is in my bathroom. So I have a choice of having a shower and hoping they don't lift the panel or waiting until they have finished for the day.

So today I am running away to my parent's house on the coast. Mum will wake me up earlier than I want to be awake, but a least I'll be able to have a shower without worrying.

    What a mess!

I read the title a bit more literally, and thought perhaps someone was trying to outdo this place.

Definitely complain to the landlord and the police. You are (I assume) a woman living alone, and tradespeople (presumably men) have opened an access into your bathroom (where you would be likely to be incompletely clothed). This is COMPLETELY unacceptable - their actions have caused you to not be secure in your own home.

With proper notification form the lessor, it's unlikely that such a complaint will get much traction when the issue is in relation to appropriate maintenance/upgrade and the action is not completely unnecessary for those doing the work.

From what OP said, the workmen being on the roof and in the attic is necessary for the work in progress. Opening the access panel into OP's bathroom is NOT necessary - that is what OP should complain about.

We were notified about them being in the roof space and on the roof.

The hatch being opened was an accident both times, there was nothing deliberate.
First time, one of them dropped a hammer on the hatch and it bounced loose. The second time, one of the apprentices miscounted to get the next stairway hatch and opened mine by mistake.

I have spoken to their boss and he has said that all the hatches have been taped closed (I have also taped the hatch on the inside too) and the stairway ones are now marked with a glow in the dark cross. The boss was very apologetic about both instances.

So now I just have at least 2 more weeks of elephants on the roof waking me up too early.

My place is going through some roof stuff also. My boyfriend works overnights, and let me tell you how fun it is with every knock our 2 dogs bark like maniacs. Two people walking by the window talking? Bark bark bark. And we are on the bottom floor. Can't imagine the top floor having fun.
