  • Elevator Stupidity

About a month ago, I was at a ball game. We parked in a multilevel hotel/casino garage (ended up on the 10th floor). After the game, when we went back to our car, we came into the elevator lobby, which was PACKED. At least 2 out of the 5 elevators were out of order. The elevators that were working were stopping at every floor to let people off. We must have waited 10 minutes before we could get on an elevator.

But as annoying as this whole snafu was, it was the stupidity of some of those waiting that really tested my patience. One group just rushed into the first elevator that opened before those who were in line could even get on. Then when we finally did get on an elevator, everyone had to cram as many as they could fit into the box. Understandable considering the circumstances, but by the time we were ready to go, the elevator was packed well beyond it's capacity limit. And even though it was clear that no one else could possibly fit, one persistent jackass was determined to get on, holding things up even more. It took three failed attempts to squeeze through before he got the hint.

Also, why can't those who parked on lower levels just take the damn stairs?

For the most part, people are lazy idiots who don't care.

The rest of us, have health issues that make it difficult to deal with stairs. For example, when it's cold outside, my knees give problems. Plus, the cold air makes it harder to breathe. I'll be fine for a few flights. But, more than that? Not happening without pain or huffing and puffing.

However, if I've just left a Penguins game, and my car is on an upper level at the Duquesne parking garage, I'll take the stairs. Good luck getting an elevator, and if you do, you can walk up in less time.

Or, better yet, shut down the elevators and eliminate that particular strawman once and for all? Your logic can be applied to all elevator passengers on such a short structure as a parking garage.

I don't know about you, but some of the parking garages near where I live can be 7-10 - OR MORE - floors.

You might think differently, but personally, I can do four or five flights of stairs before breathing starts to get harder. (Assuming I'm going up, going down I'll use the stairs no matter how many floors up I am.) I'd rather not be out of breath when I'm trying to get home after a long day or a big event.

Granted, that's not as tall as some of the marvelous sky-scrapers that exist in the world, that some people work in --- but it's still pretty damn tall if you're talking about walking up stairs.

To be honest, the situation is far simpler: there clearly was either not enough planning done on how many elevators were needed, or insufficient planning done on how to cope with a special event. (the difference is in how rare the event is. It would be idiotic, for example, to allow for enough elevators for everyone parking in the car park to get to their cars quickly for a once-a-year event, since the elevators would be unused- costing money to maintain for no benefit- for almost all of the year. Conversely, for a weekly event, it IS justified to allow for enough elevators to cover the event, since that's normal usage.)

Basically, for a ball game, which is presumably fairly common ( I think football games (at least, for any one stadium) are something like every other week in the UK during football season) it is ridiculous they haven't got enough elevators. (I can understand not having enough elevators for everyone to go down at once, but at least allow enough so that there isn't a significant wait. ( or at least, that there is visible progress- one idea I can think of, for a large event, is having the same number of elevators per floor- that way, people can at least see some form of progress towards them getting an elevator, since when one car leaves, another car arrives.)

As for a special event? depends on the event.

I was parked on the 10th floor and at least one of us was already sick. So taking the stairs wasn't an option. Had we parked on level 3, 4, or 5, we would have taken the stairs though.

On the topic of stupid people in elevators, I was reminded of the infamous elevator parties at a MAGfest. I wasn't there, but they were stupid enough to film themselves and upload the video on youtube. Judging by the angry comments and like/dislike bar, their antics clogged up the elevator, causing a lot of attendees to miss some highlights.
