Like their more sober cousins, the Ig Nobel prizes are awarded to men and women who have produced some fascinating and amazing science and/or writing. Where they differ, is that the subjects of the science are the sort where most people go "WTF?"
This year, prizes were awarded to scientists who discovered why people's hair turned green when living in some houses in Sweden, to the man who studied the dynamics of fluid-sloshing (in the context of carrying a cup of coffee while walking), and for the discovery that chimpanzees can identify individual chimps from looking at photos of chimp backsides.
But IMO, the best of the lot was the 2012 Ig Nobel Literature prize.
Awarded to the US Government General Accountability Office. For issuing a report about reports about reports that recommends the preparation of a report about the report about reports about reports.
