  • The Queen of England is about to sign a Magna Carta for equal rights

I'm posting it here in case someone feels it's a bad thing or there's issue I'm unaware of that could make this a negative.

‘We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.’

The ‘other grounds’ is intended to refer to sexuality – but specific reference to ‘gays and lesbians’ was omitted in deference to Commonwealth countries with draconian anti-gay laws.
Ah, how wonderful. I'm glad that she's taking up a bold stance about, you know, THOSE people.

She is implacably opposed to discriminating against gay people, but not QUITE so implacably that she's going to actually outright say it, in case someone disagreed.

The Queen is the Head of State, not the head of government. She is not supposed to get too involved in these kinds of things; she's simply endorsing a position that has wide public support.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

and also, she is the governor of the Church of England, which has been having massive arguments recently over gay bishops- while the rest of us wonder what all the fuss is about. For that matter, witness the reaction to Cameron announcing he was going to legalise gay marriage- the biggets discussion was on why the proposed legislation banned the CofE from conducting gay marriages rather than letting them decide.

Well, the *why* of that (at least the first level of "why") is simple enough: the CoE INSISTED that they not have the option. Presumably, when they eventually change their mind on that, it will be simple enough to get that changed.

I posted the link on my Facebook, and one of the people on my friend's list said, "That's bull crap."
I knew she was referring to the fact that the title came up as "The Queen to fight for gay rights."
Ree: ??? Equal rights for all and no discrimination? "The charter, dubbed a ‘21st Century Commonwealth Magna Carta’ declares: ‘We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.’ "
The support of a law that will abolish the outdated rule that women cannot ascend to the throne if there is a man who can fill the post? "Although the charter is not connected with the accession issue, it is seen as a clear indication that she supports new laws designed to give equal Royal accession rights to boys and girls."
Sensational headlines sell a story, but sometimes, people can get so caught up in the biased slant that they miss the real point.

Friend: I just feel she should be fighting for something we all grew up with. The National Anthem, before fighting for gay rights.

Ree: I'd rather see my nephew be able to walk down the street without getting the crap beaten out of him. I couldn't really care whether he was singing the National Anthem while doing it. I guess we all have our priorities and beliefs. I see it as her standing up for the rights of everyone, including women. If the press chooses to slant it that she is fighting for "gay rights" that shouldn't cheapen or negate that everyone should be allowed to live free from discrimination.
She had no answer for that.
            Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

The main reason why a lot of people in Britain think the fact that Cameron is trying to legalise gay marriage is not cuz they're against it, but cuz they think there are more important things to bother about first. Sort of like worrying about what your hair looks like when your arm's just been torn off. There's the welfare issue, the immigration issue, the taxing the poor issue, the fuel poverty issue, the foreign aid issue ... all of that is seemingly being swept under the carpet for the gay marriage issue, which while important pales next to the other issues.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

These are seriously overdue but I'm glad to see she is taking a stand ... no matter how much dodgy language she feels she has to use.
