  • Ontario's minimum wage to go up

Ontario has announced its minimum wage will be raised from $10.25 an hour to $11 an hour starting (I believe) in June.

On a personal level, I'll be happy to see a bit more money, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out in terms of hours. Right now our District Manager is really big on having a truckful of employees in the store on Saturdays, regardless of the actual customer flow. He seems to think there's a direct correlation between the number of employees and the number of customers, and so far reality has not yet managed to make a dent in this.

That's a bit of a sudden hike and puts Ontario even with Nunavut for highest minimum wage in the country. But, it sounds like they're tying it to the consumer index to be increased every year with inflation after this. So its a major hiccup now but once it smooths out there shouldn't be any need for further hiccups down the road.

So that means automatic increases each year? That's a good idea.

Antipoverty groups wanted it raised to $14 an hour, but I think even the most hopeful among them knew that wasn't going to happen.

they wouldn't have to keep raising it if the big companies actually gave actual raises and stuff (we get a 1% raise as cost of living every year, if they feel like it).
it's gonna piss of some of my coworkers because our company won't raise everyone's wage in parallel. so the long-term employee that scraped and begged for the 12-13 bucks they might make now will be making almost as much as a person on day 1.
not looking forward to hearing the complaining. sigh. same thing happened when they raised it last time.

I currently make $10.75 an hour, the extra .50 comes as a premium for doing the midnight shift. If my daytime coworkers get raised up to $11.00 I'm wondering if I'll still get the .50 premium to put me at $11.50.

It will be difficult for my employer to cut my hours since there are only 2 of us on that shift (corporate will not allow us to have only one person in the store alone) so I feel safe that way but I suspect that either prices will go up or hours will be cut, if not both.
