PS3 versus PS2

All right we went to Best Buy because we finally decided to get a PS2 since the prices have really come down on them. I saw game display monitors for both and studied both carefully. From what I could gather the PS3 graphics arent that much better than the PS2's games. And they're certainly NOT worth maiming/stabbing/shooting and/or killing someone over either. I saw three PS3's here for $599 each (they really got them in already in early January???) and I guess they're supposed to be THAT much just because they play "Blu-Rays"??? BTW There werent even any games at this particular outlet for the PS3's either. I also read in a newspaper column that they're also being sold as bare-bones, meaning all they come with is basically one controller and a power cord and that's it.

This is the reason that places with used games , like EB and Gamestop, are so wonderful. You can go there and get all kinds of good stuff for mad cheap, just because someone unloaded them for newer things. Staying slightly behind the curve is cheaper and just as much fun in many cases.

My hubby picked up a PS3 the other day. His first gen PS2 was on it's last legs so it did need to be replaced, and he is a tech geek, so......

I do have to say that in order to appreciate the true abilities of the PS3 you need to have a high-def capable screen to watch it on. Same with the difference between X-Box and 360. I swear, they animated the nose hairs on some of these characters

I've noticed a lot of the new consoles these days are being released as bare bones. Hubby's PS2 did not come in a package back in 1999 or 2000, whenever he got it, (I do remember the geek ecstasy when he got it, too), same story with my 360. My XBox did come with a game, but only 1 controller, and I think the only reason I got a game was because I'd waited a year or 2 after release.

The great thing about the Sony products though is that they are 100% completely back-playable. My base model 360 was not (although it keeled recently, get the BB 3 year warranty on these newer consoles, because they replaced it. Hubby upgraded to the one with the hard drive Yay!), and the one with the hard drive doesn't play all the original XBox titles.

Good thing, too, because I haven't finished FFVII yet (PS 1 game), although he's gonna have to get a memory card adapter so I won't have to restart from the beginning.

Okay, time for me to chime in. Now... The PS3? Obviously the superior machine. But really? Get a PS2.

The PS3 is way to expensive for what is 'next gen'. And as said before, unless you have a $2,000 HD home theater system, you are WASTING that money. That and theres only..... three I think, games worth playing right now anyway.

Blu-Ray is a new type of Digital Media. But it's too soon to be trying to implement it on the mass market. Picture about... 10 years ago... Maybe more, maybe 15. VHS and VCRs were still the norm. DVD players and DVDs were starting out. They were VERY expensive, a DVD player in the 90s ran to near 400-500 bucks (you can get a cheap model today for 30 bucks.)

Thats what Blu-Ray is, the next form of digital media storage. In a matter of ten years it will become the standard form... But right now it's just way too new to be worth it.

And don't trust that backwards compatibility. Some of the old PS1 discs don't play right (mostly the ones with the blue CDs, guess why. ).

The PS3 is a flop, look at any sales chart. The Wii and Xbox 360 continue to cream it in the market. Sony dropped the ball HEAVILY on this one.


And I don't know what you guys are talking about. I don't remember any of the systems I bought ever coming with more than one controller and maybe a demo disc/brand game like the N64 coming with Mario 64, unless you count those ANNOYING Silver/Gold/Platinum sets the Xbox 360 came out in.

When we got an original Nintendo, it came with 2 controllers, 2 games, and the light gun.

I don't remember what all came with the Atari 2600 all that well (I was pretty little, give me a break), but I think it came with 2 joysticks, 2 of those lil' wheel-deely bobbers that you played breakout with, and a game or two.

Actually, the most recent version is not 100% backward compatible. More along the lines of 80-90%, because rather than include the chip from the PS2, Sony decided to software emulate it. I believe it's only the model that comes with the 60 GB HDD that is 100% backward compatible... And the original bare-bones couldn't even play PS1 games.

How compatible is the XBox 360 with all the XBox games?

It can play ones made by Microsoft, but ones from other software companies are pretty hit and miss.
Most of my original XBox games I have to play on my XBox.

The PS3 will really be unbelievable in time, as the system is no where NEAR being optimized for these games. But it will take time.

Despite the claims I have heard (and laughed at), there is nothing wrong with getting a PS2 right now. The PS3 will get it's games, and will be incredible. But these things are not going to happen in a few weeks.

Haven't been able to play any of our consoles for awhile, Hubby's been hogging the setup playing Burnout on my XBox.
However, when we play 2 player, I kick his ass....I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing since that is determined by spectacular crashes....

Funny, mine can't put Burnout down either...

I like the Playstation 2 a lot, and there are games I'd still play if I had the extra change to get my hands on them... I don't remember the full reasoning behind choosing the Xbox 360 instead, but I think part of it was pricing, part of it had to do with the hardware and part of it had to do with the games available for it...

I just wish it was backwards compatible. There are a few Xbox games I really like and none of them work on the 360. (we don't have an Xbox)

My brother-in-law just told me the other day that with X-Box live, you can download patches to get some of the older games to work. I haven't tried it yet myself, maybe one of these days and I can report back how it works

Yea, we read about the Phoenix. Problem is, the patch needs to be available for the game you want. We checked out the website and none of my favorite games were on the list of available patches. Thanks for the thought though!

My hunny and I will just have to check the list periodically.
