I get where you're going Blas. It is quite annoying to have people tell you how to live your life or judge you based on appearances.

It can be used on the flipside, also. I'm not a tomboy, but I don't wear make-up that much. Once in a while, I like lipgloss or some eyeshadow and mascara. I don't do much with my hair because I like it when it air dries because it does this wavy thing on its own. I don't normally put product in my hair, as it messes with said wavy-ness. Most of the time, I wear my glasses, rather than my contacts. On any given day, I wear what I feel like. I don't tan.

Almost everyday, I hear someone harping on me about wearing make-up or anything that I don't do or think I don't like being girly on the days that I wear jeans and a t-shirt. In reality, I love doing those girly things like getting massages or having a girls' night out. I happen to look better in no to very little make up.

It is very annoying and honestly Blas, don't listen to them or when they start it, change the subject to Obama's health care reform, since people are assuming that you are a dumb Barbie doll, and go back to what you were doing.

I can kinda relate, Blas. On my brief forray out of travel when I worked in a machine shop (albeit in the office), I got slammed reguarly by some of the older girls in the office because I wore makeup and tended to be a (harmless) flirt. The sad part is, the two of them that were older and gave me the hardest time were actually and MUCH prettier than me and could get away without wearing makeup! One day I said to one of them, "Hey Carla - did it ever occur to you that my insecurities make me feel like I HAVE to wear makeup to look pretty, unlike you. You're pretty without it!"

Shut her up and made her feel bad.

Anyway, I *personally* know that I feel prettier with it. And maybe that's an insecurity within myself. But I sure as hell don't think people who DON'T wear it are slovenly idiots and I respected their choice (and was a wee bit jealous! lol)...so it used to piss me off that they couldn't give me the same respect for feeling like I needed it.

I don't know if it's so much looking prettier.......I have very bad skin, but I'm certaily no monster without makeup.....and considering people still gawk when I'm not wearing it....well maybe that might be a loose booger they're staring at......but either way, I don't wear makeup because I think I'm ugly....I use makeup the way it was intended. To enchance my features.

My eyebrows and eyelashes are almost blonder than my hair. I want to make them a little darker to accentuate them.

For work, all I wear is coverup and some mascara, maybe eyeshadow if I feel festive, and some chapstick or something on my lips to keep them moist, since I work in a very dry area.

On the weekends I go all out and wear more makeup, do my hair all nice, and wear my nicest clothes. Cuz I can and I prefer being glamorous over being the homely me that I have to be 5 days a week

Oh, btw, just for good measure, I'd like to point out that the one particular girl I was referring to in my original post is exactly my age....not older like Ann and some of my problem coworkers.

No one needs to wear make-up. Some people choose to wear it, some choose not to, but no one needs to or "gets away with" not wearing it. Unless you're a model, you don't need to maintain a certain level of attractiveness.

That's a very literal interpretation of Peppergirl's statement. When someone says "she can get away with no make-up", it's generally understood that they mean she's as pretty without cosmetics as others are with. Of course they don't mean "get away with it" like she's breaking a law or something.

Don't be so sure. I've actually been close to being arrested for running around without makeup. Scaring small children and pets, and whatnot.

                  Hahaha. Kidding of course.

I hate make-up, its smell and its appearance. But it's everyone's right to use it if they so wish. Just please stand downwind from me, ok?

I have some physical imperfections that screw with my self consciousness enough that I wear makeup everyday (only exception is if I am not going out, or if I am going someplace like the doctor that I really don't care at all what I look like). As such, I don't judge people who wear makeup. Everyone has their choices to make, and everyone has their reasons for what they do. Luckily, I've never had anyone comment about my use of makeup, so I've never had to defend myself like that, but if they did...I'd probably have a few choice words for them

Thank you for your kind words...

I don't even see the point in ripping on someone for wearing makeup. Sure, some girls don't know how to wear it and look really silly, but just because a girl wears makeup? Especially when they just wear it to look presentable?

Don't even get me started on this other girl....she's just nuts. If you even say the word "pink", she goes into a huff and kicks and screams that she hates pink, frilly things, girly things, etc etc, she's a TOMBOY......and she throws that fit wearing a pair of high heels, a skirt, makeup, her hair all done......yeah. It's too funny. But then again, she's also one of those "friends" I've talked about in other threads, so of course her head isn't really on straight.

You can usually mess will people if you completely change your style of dress.

For me, I'd have to lose the Birks and/hiking shoes, wear a non-hippie skirt, blow dry my hair, and wear make up. Or go Goth again.

I might try this experiment....just to play with their minds........

I am a very girly girl. I work in the beauty industry, so I wear makeup on a daily basis (it's kind of part of my dress code). I usually, for work, have my hair back in a ponytail or bun, but wear it down and blowdry it nicely in my "off" time. I wear what could be considered girly clothes. I love high heels. I also love track pants and sneakers, too, but I have no objection to getting dressed up. I own designer jeans. I have, and use, every kind of cosmetic imaginable. I don't think any of this makes me shallow, or unintelligent, or less authentic than anyone else. It's just a part of my personality. This is one of those things that I think women may never agree on. Some think it's phony or tacky or slutty or whatever, some just enjoy it and have fun with it. I'm also what many consider fairly geeky (love sci-fi, comics, video games, love to read, love to learn new things, etc) and I often find people take me less seriously in that respect or are extra surprised to learn of my interests- like I can't take an interest in my appearance and be in any way cerebral or academically minded. I don't mind, though. I like when people underestimate me. Gives me an advantage.

Also, I've worked in the cosmetic/beauty industry for more than ten years. I've never worked with makeup that other people can smell when it's on my face. Lotions, absolutely. Perfumes, sure. Hair products, in certain circumstances. But not makeup. I'm sure there are product lines that have makeup with a strong smell, I just can't say I've encountered any that are strong enough to smell on other people in everyday circumstances, and I'm quite sensitive to smell. Most perfumes send me into an allergy attack or a splitting headache. Lancome and Chanel come to mind as lines with strong smelling products in the packaging (Lancome's lipstick, Chanel's liquid foundation, etc.) but once applied, the smell isn't strong enough to notice unless you're up in someone's face, sniffing.
