At my old job working in the warehouse/call center, I would often times work until 10 or 11pm or a bit later if things were running late getting wrapped up...and of course, I couldn't get to sleep as soon as I got home, I usually didn't even have dinner until after I got out of work. So I'd often stay up till 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning and then sleep in till 10am or noon. When I did this while living with my parents, they were on me all the time for "sleeping too much" and "sleeping those weird hours isn't normal or healthy for the human body." Apparently sleeping 8 hours isn't "normal or healthy." Or maybe they just expected me to get home at 11:30 and fall asleep instantly so I could get up by 7 or 8am.

If I remember rightly, statistically, people who work nights and sleep days don't live as long as those who do the opposite... even working the same jobs and getting the same total amount of sleep. If that's correct, then technically it's not healthy... but then, it's a necessity, it's nobody's business, and I'd bet whoever complains has *something* they do that's both worse healthwise and totally voluntary. Like smoking, or eating beef, or annoying their neighbors"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

Oh, I'm well aware of how unhealthy it is to work nights. It's harder on both the body and the mind.
But, I'd have to get a different job to work a better shift, and even then, I probably wouldn't get what I make an hour with my shift premium for working nights. That extra buck (or in my case, a little more than that) really adds up every pay period. As it is, if I went to a day shift, not only would I still be working till later evening, but I'd be losing nearly $300 a month.
And Maggie, my parents were the same with me when I worked at the gas station that year and some odd months. I'd work until 10 or so at night, stay up until at least midnight or so, and not be up until later morning/early afternoon the next day to do it all over again. Somehow, that was unacceptable to lay in bed all day.
