I'm in the 'if I ask, just tell me' camp. I'm very adventurous and I will usually try strange things so if you tell me it's 'eel' I'll probably try it.

However there are a few things I will not ever ever touch and I do not want you tricking me into trying them because you think I'll like them. Yes, I may like them, but if I find out what you had me taste was shark fin soup, lamb, or veal I will hurt you (for example).

If I find out that you fed me headcheese I will vomit all over you and then hurt you (I have an extreme aversion to brains and eyeballs. I can watch violent movies but if it has something to do with brains and eyeballs I hide my eyes).

Besides, nine times out of ten, what 'exotic' thing you think you're tricking me into trying I've probably already had. If I haven't there's a reason I haven't, and I reserve the right to know what everything I put in my mouth is. It has nothing to do with potential like/dislike. If I don't like it, I'll simply spit it out and move on with life. I don't know why people have a hard time with the fact that I want to know what I'm eating.

I'll pretty much try anything, but if I ask - tell me what it is.

Do you guys ever find yourself re-trying things you hated in childhood, then find yourself liking as an adult?

That's happened to me a few times. Sauerkraut is the only one that comes to mind immediately, though.

LOL that one is a big one for me I love it on ribs. I hated it as a kid. I have also noticed it goes in reverse too. I loved Spinach as a kid can't stand the stuff now.

I've tasted a wide variety of bizarre things. I don't have to be tricked into it.

I mean, I will willingly eat bugs, okay? I've probably eaten more weird stuff than most of the people I know with the exception of my friend S, who is Phillipino.

The reason I try to get my sister to try different foods is because I want her to experience a culture. Food is a big part of a culture. Since I can't afford to take her on trips everywhere (if I could, I would take her), food is the next best thing. Another reason is because it might give us something else in common. Plus, it's so much fun to experience new things together.

I'm pretty stubborn with food. I cannot stand Mexican or Asian food, I really can't. I think it's the spices and the hot factor with the Mexican food (because I have a digestive system that works about as well as my car), and I just never found any type of Asian food very tempting.

And I keep dating guys who are obsessed with Mexican and Asian food and who will turn their nose up at pastas, pizzas, burgers and fries.

So I'm a closed minded idiot American. Sue me.

I find it very interesting that you jump immediately to saying that. No one here is saying that people not willing to try new food are close minded, let alone idiot. It's more about comfort than anything, knowing what you're comfortable with. Do you feel guilty about not willing to try stuff that other people like? Why so hostile in a thread that was pretty neutral up until this point?

I think blas was talking about the guys she has dated:

She didn't specifically say so, but I'm assuming some of them have implied she was uncultured because of her preference for burgers and fries. Am I right, blas?

Oh I didn't mean to come across as hostile, forgive me if that was thought.

Boozy, you are correct.....I have been accused by friends/acquaintances and even some boyfriends of being an uncultured American (that one makes me giggle because I don't really have any foreign friends, save for some of you guys) or other insults.

Personally I do think those that choose not to try new foods are close minded. That doesn't make them bad people. We all have our faults.
If I went out with someone like that I hope I wouldn't compound thier fault with one of my own by forcing it on them.

I don't like trying new foods.

I just have certain food preference and know what I like.

I fail to see how that makes me close minded.
In my case, I feel it's more being a creature of habit.

                          How is that a "fault"?
                          Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

I think there are situations where someone would know they wouldn't like something. As open as I am to trying things, if something is dripping with mayonaise it ain't happening. The mere smell of that nastiness is enough to make me hurl. Or if something's really really spicy and someone can't handle heat, then of course they won't like that.

But otherwise, yes, you should try new things, why limit your realm of experience? I've never had a kumquat before, so I don't know if I like it or not. Why would I turn it down, just 'cuz it has a funny name?

                              Green bell peppers and beets.

Oh, and of course, cashews (me being allergic).

Some things I know I won't like, and know they won't like me.

Everything else, I will pretty much try. I mean, I know I hate tomato soup and coleslaw, but every recipe is different, so I'm willing to at least try it. One bite of food I don't care for will probably not kill me (well, unless it's cashews. Then all bets are off).

I had a bite of tomato soup last weekend that was to die for. I didn't have a bowl, but I could easily have. It was delish. And again, tomato soup is something I really do not usually like.

I'd rather know what I'm eating before I try anything. I'm not super picky, but there are certain foods that are out of the question, seafood for one, any seafood. Even canned tuna, anything like that. I will not touch it, it boggles some people's minds. The thing that drives me insane is when people say "oh but you just haven't had it cooked the right way", sorry but seafood stinks regardless of how it's cooked (and yes, it does, fresh or not fresh it stinks.).

I also don't like mushrooms, though that's less of an issue with me, I'll just pick them out of things I'm eating.

and I'm allergic to raw celery, which is just odd, but I avoid it. I don't like my mouth going numb.
